Failure to boot up and restarting

Currently having problems getting my computer to boot up.
It will start to boot up for a while and then will randomly restart
It usually reaches the Windows XP screen before restarting but has booted up enough to reach the Desktop screen before restarting.
But what I find confusing is that once it has restarted it will boot up for about five seconds then restart again.
It will repeat this two or three times and then just power off.

Have already changed the PSU as it was dying already but this hasn't solved the problem.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Oscar

Sounds like one of your RAM modules may have died or developed bad areas. I suffered from the same problem about a year ago. Best advice is to go here >> http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp << there you can download the windows memory diagnostic tool. Either you make a bootable floppy or a bootable CD depending on what you have available, (i.e. not everyone has floppy drive still), obviously you'll need a second computer to make this bootable media, however as you have managed to post a thread I'll assume you have free access to a second PC.

The weblink does provide a lot of information so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

If you do find that some of your RAM is bad. Then assuming you have more than one module you'll have to go in to your machine and try and find which one is causing the trouble, which is again assuming that it is just one module causing the problem.

However even if you do find the faulting module and remove from your system it is most likely that windows has been corrupted and will need a repair install or a complete install sadly.

However let’s just see what the memory diagnostic throws up first
