fake antivirus virus blocking web IE from internet acces

Got a fake antivirus virus had to boot it up in safe mode and instal new spyware virus scanner. ran that got rid of the virus, also downloaded and ran malwarebytes.

Virus is gone but it has left my browsers unable to access the internet, my outlook still works and if i switch users the browsers work in the other users account.

I'm using windows xp

I had the exact same problem. Look up my thread in the securit section. I got alot of help from a fellow member there. I ran malwarebytes spybot avg hijackthis and combofix. It took a while and you will see that in the other thread but I am as good as new.


Edit: I have heard several times from multiple sources not to run combofix without being told to do so by a moderator or someone trustworthy. I am not sure why but thats just what I hear.

Go to internet options (control panel)>connections (Tab)>LAN settings (button). Uncheck anything in the Proxy Server section.

The fake antivirus variants usually set the proxy settings to direct you to their "software" website. This is probably still set.
