Fallout 3 failing big time with W7.

Sorry if this should be in the Games section, but it is a problem with the OS I think so I'm trying it here.

I am trying to play Fallout 3 on 64-bit Windows 7, through Steam as that's how I bought the game. When I launch the game, it goes straight to a black screen, a loading cursor appears for a few seconds and then the whole system (not just the game) freezes. I have to restart the whole compy.

I have tried various forms and combinations of compatiability and administrator privledge modes with Steam, fallout 3 launcher and fallout 3 exe.... none of that worked. I tried turning off virus scanners and firewalls and all sorts of things. But absolutely nothing is effecting this problem one bit.

Please help.

Sorry. Stupid of me not to include that info.

i7 920.
Asus P6T SE.
Kingston triple channel DDR3 PC3-12800 C8 6gigs.
Zotac GTX275.
Creative X-Fi Elite Pro.

Anything else that would be relevant?

I'd love to be able to post an error message or anything at all haha, but there is seriously nothing.... black screen, no audio, few seconds and then complete system lock.

I tried that.

Uninstalled the X-Fi and disabled it in device manager. I tried older nVidia drivers, and the latest beta ones too.

No luck. Same problem.

I even tried uninstalling the Steam Fallout 3 and installing the normal one from some iso's.... I'm getting exactly the same problem though, so I don't think it's a problem with Steam anymore.

Well GPU is idling at 44 right now which I believe is fine. For the CPU for an i7 I'm supposed to observe core0 and core1 right? They are hovering around 38 idle.

I haven't OC'd anything at this stage, and ambient temperature is 21 celcius at the moment. I have an Antec 900 and am using stock CPU cooling. The case and room are well ventilated.

Not sure if I can monitor the temps during my problem seeing as it goes to a black screen and then completely freezes, but the idling temps would indicate that is unlikely to be the problem, right?

Hmm... I might be wrong on the temp thing.

I've been playing TF2 for 30 mins, everything max'd and in windowed mode and GPU and CPU temps are sitting at around 70..... seems way too high.

But why would that cause I system freeze when I launch F3 if Prime95 and IntelBurnTest don't? Seeing as they both stress everything way more than game that hasn't even had to do any graphics processing at the point that it freezes.
