fan necessary for external drive?

I recently bought a 60 GB Hard Drive that I enclosed in a external casing that came with a IDE to Firewire Interface as well as a cooling fan. The fan would be installed regardless of what goes in it being that it is a seperate product, so my question is if I can unplug the fan because it is kinda noisy.

I removed the fan from my enclosure because I had the same problem. Though my enclosure is solid aluminum, which allows for good heat dissipation even without the fan.

You dont need a HDD fan period although its always reccomended.
