Fancy security software

New here...:)

I recently took an old computer to get a tune-up. The guy said it includes clean up of unused files, fixing registry errors, and basically making the computer run smoothly. Unfortunately, it also had over 200 viruses and that had to be dealt with as well.

My question is what exactly does this guy do differently then what the average joe would do with a software(s) that did the following:

Anti-spyware
Anti-adware
Anti-virus
unused file cleaner
registry fix
.......and whatever else I missed.

Granted, nothing is 100% if you surf around in shark infested waters and download like crazy. I was just wondering what combination of fancy softwares they use to literally clean my system that my $50 dollar software was unable to do.

Is their a special geek store they go to that only they are privy too?

$50.00 isn't a bad price for what was done....are you happy with the computer?
You can get all that done for free though.

For the malware you would go to a Malware Forum, register and perform the basic scans as indicated, post them on the forum and they would recommend certain programs to run to make sure the machine is clean based on what the logs show.

There's plenty of tutorials around for slow computers....all for free.

The use of registry cleaners is not recommended BTW.

Just to add....there's no magic or secret program out there that does it all.
All the tools used are out in the public and anyone can download them, but I wouldn't recommend running any them unless you're familiar with that particular tool.
MBAM, SAS, Spybot, AdAware, and anti-virus programs are all fine to use, the specialty tools I would recommend you stay away from.

Here's an example of My Preventive Maintenance:

Actually, he charged $80 bucks......and yes the computer runs much better. :D

It's just that he mentioned more then once that no anti-virus, etc. is 100%.......which I knew already, but it just made me ponder over what it is he and [say] geeksquad do differently to remove viruses/spyware/etc.? I mean, they are still using a software just like me. So what gives?

I just figured that it was more then just clicking "start scan" for them.

$80.00 is still OK, geeksquad charges way more then that....IMO you got a deal.

What makes you think that the GeekSquad removes all the malware or are experts in the removal of malware? Where are they trained?? Who trains them???

Yes he's right.....there's no one program to get it all.....malware is very sophisticated now.

With some malware it's suggested just to format the hard drive and reinstall the OS because you'll never be able to trust the computer.

The days of going to your add/remove programs and uninstalling some programs, fixing some entries with HJT and then deleting some files is over.
The fact is that todays malware is so sophisticated you can't fix your own computer, you need help.

The key today is prevention, make sure your computer is protected.

If I haven't answered your questions....please post back.

Yes, that is definately helpful. I've already downloaded a few. Thanks...:)

Ok, that pretty much answers my question. So even though the tools are out there, it still takes some know-how and formal training to know how to use them and what methods work best.......right?

For the malware you would go to a Malware Forum, register and perform the basic scans as indicated, post them on the forum and they would recommend certain programs to run to make sure the machine is clean based on what the logs show.

Your not suggesting that they need to go elsewhere then right here at Computerforum, are you MrC?:confused:

look to be honest geek squad does not get much training a person just tells you that you need to use this this ad this to check and remove and voila its done, they just use more than one program to take them off. I myself use about 4-6 different programs depending on how heavily it is infected.

Geeksquad sound like a bunch of stupid teenagers trying to earn some quick money. but we here at computerforum actually know what we are doing, and free of charge. :)

TBH all you need is a free antivirus like AVG Free coupled with MalwareBytes and HiJackThis.

Dont forget though dont have two anti-viruses running at the same time since the other will try and get rid of the other and bad stuff can happen.
