This might sound like a dumb question, but...

Aren't case fans supposed to blow straight out?

I am asking this because I opened up my case today and found out that my fans don't blow straight, the air comes out the sides of the fans.

It really depends on the design of your fans, if your worriedthen just buy some new ones. All fans ive ever bought blow straight out.

Well fans are just supposed to move a chunk of air from A to B at a decent rate .... the direction depends on how you place them in your case :)

Take a look at the attachment. See, the air does not flow straight, it blows to the sides of the fan. So if you put your hand in front of the fan you CAN'T feel the air, but if you put your hand below, above, or to either side you CAN feel the air. So really it's not moving a chunk of air from point A to point B, it's moving chunks of air from point A to points B,C,D,E,... I was wondering if this was normal.

NOTE: I know the air doesn't actually blow out the end of the fan that I show it in the picture (that's the intake side), but it's the only picture I could get.

I'm using AeroCool fans and they all blow out the the sides. For my setup in that case that I have it works good because they blow across the hard drives that are on the tops and bottoms of the fans. I have one at the very bottom that I wished blew straight, but it really don't matter because it's still blowing at 52CFM.

there's no air in the middle (close to the fan) because of the motor housing, if you check further away you will find the air does cover the middle

Ya, my fans blow directly on my graphics card so it is ok, I just always thought that fans were supposed to blow straight.

On the subject, why dont they put the motor and housing in the back, or reverse the fan spin direction so that you can get the air to blow in the middle as well?

because as long as the fan hub/motor housing is in the middle you wont get air in the middle close to the fan, it doesn't matter which way it spins.
