fast or midrange computer under 800$? my aunt wants a good computer but nothing expensive. is there anything with good speed that offers possible gaming and for work? doesn't need to be superfast but not slow either. kinda fast but not spectacular. Should I tell her to get a computer from dell as she wants a package deal and then upgrade for her the processor or something? or what do you recommend? thanks

It doesn't sound like you want to build your own computer. If so, I recommend getting an HP. Dells are cool but expensive for what you get. Go to your local costco and you can pick up a good HP laptop or desktop for almost nothing.

They all come with about 2gb of RAM, descent CPUs and the graphics cards are good enough for playing most games, if you wanted to do that.

Also check costcos papers because sometimes they have coupons, my ex just picked up a great laptop for under $500 that ran video games and ran them fast, i was surprised. They don't die either, ive had one.

Hope that helps :)

I absolutely agree. HP has been coming out with some nice "home office" systems lately, and they can even handle games pretty well. Check some of these HP systems: http://tinyurl.com/ybucpe3

When you visit the link, there are "user reviews". I like to make my purchases based off actual user reviews, because it's a good gauge of the quality of the product based on REAL USERS. The items on the page are 4 or 5 stars, and some computers have many reviews...just FYI...

You should be able to keep these close to $800 and get what you want out of them.

Side note - My brother and his wife recently bought one..They are EXTREMELY QUIET. He leaves his on all the time and even when I'm right next to it, I can't hear it.

He also plays some decent 3D games as well. Don't get me wrong, it's not intended to be a hard core gaming system for $2-4k, but for a nice "above average" home pc, it's a great deal!

ah so HP is better for the price then dell? how bout performance or is that not much of a difference? but I guess that would depend on the hardware right?

so which one has better quality hardware?
actually the one I'm using and the one I use a a regular basis is not pre-built. It's a build. But it's really old. The one I'm using right now runs on AMD Anthlon Processor 1.01 Ghz, with 256MB of ram these are probably 10 years old possibly 11. It's pretty slow as you can imagine. Well for normal internet surfing it's okay I suppose.

From my experience, Dell has a high rate of failure.

Their motherboards have cheap components and they also use cheap hard drives.

I've dealt with more failed Dell computers than any other brand.

sadly since all my main computers desktops are all custom build, it was not easy knowing how to get her a computer. I was going to give her one of my old computers but it would be way slow I didn't have time to check the ram but the Pentium is the old celeron processor. She wants a packaged deal. Since my sister just got a dell hybrid and I've used it, it seems pretty good. I thought dell was okay and since I keep getting all these dell magazines and they look so tempting. I thought getting a custom dell would be nice for her but thanks for the heads up! If I knew earlier I wouldn't have even let my sister get the hybrid. Sigh. thanks. Now I need someone to evaluate the HP components. But I do see more deals that are worth it from HP compared to Dell what other good brands are good to recommend to my aunt?

One tip, don't read those fancy ad introductions about how company X has managed to increase the bla bla bla at low costs and how efficient it can prove with the bla bla bla. It's just marketing.

What do you mean "evaluate HP components"?

If you want a pre-build pc with good specs, go for HP. Nice at normal levels, and affordable at normal levels. Although, with 800$ at disposal, you could easily build your own specs with a very good screen and the like.
