Fast User Switching STOPPED Working

Everything has worked fine for years.

Using XP Home with two users.

Now, when I click Start>Log Off>Switch User, I get taken to the welcome screen. If I click the other username the welcome screen vanishes as if it is logging in, but immediately jumps back to the welcome screen. If I fully log out, I can then change user.

I have checked the error log and it shows a termservice error and also something about being unable to undump the users profile or something? Can't recall the exact words now.

I have googled and found many others with similar issues, but none of the fixes seem to work.

Any ideas on how to sort this? It is really bugging me now!

Yes, but that did not work and caused me major issues which took me ages to resolve!

doing the system restore removed the service pack 3 and removed the IE updates. The computer basically ground to a halt! I have let it do it's updates and re-installed service pack 3 manually. I have then run a malware scan just in case. The remote desktop connection also failed and I had to copy some files from a working XP machine to this one.

The computer is back and working now, with the exception of the fast user switching.
