OK so I thought it be an interesting idea for a thread, simply what is your favourite version of Windows and why?

You could choose the version which you remember best, the version you found the most stable (hahaha), the version which worked best for you, etc.

You can choose as many versions as you like in case you can't choose one - the poll is public too. Not really including Windows Server but if a version of Windows Server so happens to be your favourite release of Windows just reply back to this thread saying so. :)

I know it's not strictly 'Windows' but I have included DOS too.

It will be interesting to see which version people like the most round here.

XP was great and stable for a long time. Though I remember before SP2 came out it was absolute crap. 7 took over where Vista failed and it's been a great, stable, and powerful OS.

I voted for Vista cause its so pretty lookin'

Haha yeah I remember beta testing Vista when I was like 8 years old (Dad got me a beta) and I remember liking it just because of it was pretty - and the gadgets too! I thought the clock gadget was really cool! :D

I cant get on with vista, there is no more support for the others but I think W2K is the best OS out therre ;) its simplistic, if a bit incompatible. 7 is just brilliant but XP is the most easy and compatible OS out there.

Windows 2000 Pro,Enjoyed using this back in the day...Was just really stable and never gave me any issues.

Windows XP was good also,Would probably be still using XP if it had decent 64bit support and DX11 :D

I voted 3 ways. :)

2000 pro.
Quite simply the best of the best. It is XP minus all the crap that we don't really need. I still use it, and quite frankly, if Adobe still supported it, or at least Chrome, then I would never need anything else. It runs so beautifully smooth too.

XP
It is 2000+ basically. It will do in a pinch if you need something it has, like flash. Otherwise I do not really like it. Its like a watered down version of the original, and just looks like garbage to me.

Vista.
Has a bad name. I have found it to be very stable, and only ever had 2 problems with it, and they were both driver crashes that may or may not have been a hardware issue. It is good for games, and in my personal opinion, is the 2000 to 7 basically. Its 7 minus all the crap that I don't need.

Got to agree with you about XP's UI, urrghh - the Luna interface was shockingly horrible.

XP was a great solid system but it wasn't anything to look at. I installed a Vista themed skin on my XP that looked pretty good. Windows 7 is great. Quick and pretty but not too obnoxious and flashy. I really like the automatic update system and updating your drivers automatically. Never used Vista and anything older I was too young to know anything about it being good.

Agreed.

I find the whole idea of 7 as obnoxious. The look definitely. But they could have just done a service pack or SE to vista and been fine. But nope, a reason to ditch it they found.

Automatic updates have been around for a long time. 12 years to be exact, maybe longer.
I was too young to know anything about it being good.
hmm?? your only 2 years younger than I. You should have been plenty old enough to know if it was good or not.

I don't understand what you find so flashy about 7 Wolfe. I think Vista had far more flash and it was toned down nicely in 7.

Its a matter of taste, but even with the small menu bar its still too big and stands out too much. You all might find it fine, but I find it distracting. The black bar of vista was much less distracting to me. The grey bar of 2k and before was better yet than any of them.

XP is pretty quick on standard equipment, and 7 is nice and quick, especially if you have an SSD.

just to pick your brains a bit, what exactly do you consider standard equipment?

I personally don't see the quickness of 7. I am not saying it is not quick, but vista will boot just as quick and at least o my system, don't use a terribly high amount of memory comparing the 2. There may be more going on, but on high power components I do not feel a difference. Not tried XP on the i7/480 yet, but I bet I would not feel a great deal of difference apart from boot time there either.

I chose XP, but I think that is more because it was the first windows I ever used, rather than my knowledge of the different systems.

Standard hardware as in a CPU from within the last 5 years, 1GB of RAM, and a 7200RPM HDD. With 7 a little more RAM and it's usually pretty good.

So basically core 2 or newer? That would run anything out I rekon. Im running 2k bloody quick on my M90 with 4GB t7200 and FX2500m.
