Hi,

Will Fear Combat play fine on my compy with over 1Gb of memory?

I should be getting a gig of memory over the weekend so i have the memory stated in my siggy.

It will be a 1Gb stick and a 256Mb.

Like this...

1024 + 256 = 1280

Ive tried playing Fear Combat on it before and the graphics were great but i had bad lag because the lack of free memory i had and my hard drive was going like crazy:D

It is still going to be laggy because of your cpu and more so because of your video card. You would also be best leaving your ram and 1024mb's even of 2 sticks of 512. This way you'll be running the ram at it's top speed. The way you suggest will slow it down some.

Hi Blue,

The reason i want 1Gb stick is because i only have 2 memory slots on my pc and i want to get the most ram as i can .
2 x 512 sticks cost more that just a single 1Gb stick for some reason:(

So if i do get 1Gb stick though your saying that the 256Mb stick at the same speed will slow it down?

Im stuck with this pc for a while so memory upgrade is my only option.

I wont be spending anything else on this system.

yea thats a good upgrade, but i think you'll need a much better video card to run it on high. is that AGP? x850xtpe or 7800gs would be the best cards for that inteface.
a little overclocking on the cpu would be beneficial as well.

It will slow it down yes because your not taking advantage of the duel channel capability's of the ram. Now I'm certainly no ram expert but I'm pretty sure the timings will be slowed because of that certain configuration. As a general rule of thumb it's always best too go with 2 equal DIMMS (in size and speed) then the config your going with. I'd spend the little extra for the 2 DIMMS of 512 if it were me. Once you reach 1GB the 256mb is not benefiting you that much anyway. In this case go for speed and not amount.

I'd go into better detail but as I say... I'm no RAM expert, Anyone else want to add to it?

You can always go here http://www.computerforum.com/computer-memory-hard-drives/ and ask about the RAM in more detail.

I didnt think my ram was Dual channel compatible anyway?

Anyway...If i can find 2 x 512 sticks then as you said Blue i will get them but i havnt seen them anywhere as cheap as just a single stick.

Thanks :)

Not sure why you thought that. The following link leads to a specification sheet on your motherboard http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=c00069442&lc=en

Now the PC3200 ram you use (in your sig) is not necessarily compatible with your PC and would be considered overkill. You could save money by purchasing PC-2700.

if you purchase 2 x 512mb DIMMS over 1 x 1GB DIMM it should not cost much more then approx. 5-6 dollars.

Edit:

Also want to point out again that your video will hold you back allot. I know you said the graphics looked great but that means nothing in the way of performance. Prey runs pretty slow on my 6800GT If I turn the options up too high. And yes Prey looks great on my 6800GT.

Just a thought.

Thanks Blue for your help,

So ill see what 2x 512 PC-2700 sticks i can pick up.

As for you mentioning my video card....

Realy im not gonna be upgrading anything else on this rig because its not worth it.

Im saving up for a decent compy but i wont be able to buy it yet so just the memory for this and thats it.

The only games i play anyway are...

Age of empires 3
Simcity 4
Warrock (Needs realy a gig to run properly)
