WHEN I SWITCHED ON THE CPU IT SHOWS THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE.
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Startup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I tried many times. but get no result. Is there any solution without reinstalling the XP? I am using WIN XP SP2.

plz help.

thanks in advance

What that message is telling you is that one file of the system registry is corrupt and cannot be loaded. Most times this is not as serious as it sounds.

Take your XP CD and go to the Recovery Console. When there do a chkdsk /r followed by fixboot and fixmbr. Sometimes this fixes your problem but if it does the downside is that your hard drive is failing and it will happen again. Best to check your drive and see if it may need replacing.

It is not a hardware issue, it is saying that it can not boot windows off the hard drive.

But follow what Terii said, done that before, and it will fix it.

Cohen my experience is that a hard drive is failing. This method gives you time to rescue your data and image the drive if necessary.
