Files not installing correctly - is it my new SSD? Please Help :)

Hi everyone :)

I built my first computer and the only storage that I have at the moment is an OCZ Agility 3 SSD - 120GB

and I am trying to install games from Steam, and other various sites and for some reason files are getting missed out while installing - for example I downloaded a game and it missed 137 files out! and Skyrim missed out 4 massive files that took about an hour to re download them and it only installed one of the 4 files

I have over 20GB of free space left on the SSD and was wondering does anyone know what is causing this problem please? My internet connection is okay and I have never had this problem before with downloads on my laptop, my brothers laptop and our Xbox etc - so I don't think it's the internet connection,

I have ordered a 320GB HDD 7200 RPM/16mb cache (I think it's a faster than normal one) and I am hoping that this will install the files correctly :)

Does anyone know what this could be though? I have also ordered a £30 CPU cooler, thinking maybe it might be linked to this -

It's my first ever build so it could be highly likely that I have built it incorrectly ;)

Specifications:

3rd Generation Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40GHz Socket LGA1155

MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Fractal Design R3 Black Pearl

Samsung S222BB 22x DVD+/-RW SATA Black

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular Power Supply

PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 Graphics Card

120GB OCZ Agility 3 2.5" Solid State Drive

Windows 7 64bit

and coming soon (hopefully resolves the problem)

Cooler master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler

New Seagate 320 GB 2.5" 7200 RPM Sata Hard Drive Momentus Thin 7MM

It used to blue screen a lot and restart - and then I re installed Windows 7 (and it took about 7 attempts, as it would not install properply - possibly linked to my problem with installing games)

But now its been reinstalled it rarely blue screens :) I'm starting to think maybe I should upgrade the RAM to 16GB? (can I install just 4gb and have one empty RAM Slot?)

Also my games tend to crash a lot and I cannot see why ? is my RAM faulty? ?

Sorry this post is so long - I just want to get the problems sorted out :) Thanks everyone :)

Thanks :) That might be what it is, I hope not though, really cannot afford another motherboard:(

Please ignore that spammer.

I'd try testing your RAM first. If that passes, download the SSD manufacturer diagnostic.

And if you are bluescreening then perform the following. Not sure if you have brought this issue up before or not.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

thanks john :) I have re installed windows and the blue screen issue seems to have gone now:) I have deleted lots of space and now have 40GB free instead of 20 :) Seems to be good so far

With only an ssd, the previous 20gb left outa 120 is cutting it too close. you have to leave some space unused, not to mention pagefile will use up space not shown in any disk managements.. If it looked like 20gb was free, it was actually a lot less than that. So at least some of your DL problems were due to not enough space. I suggest you just put a couple few of your most played games, or the few that benefit from the ssd speed, and still get a hdd to keep data and other games on so you can keep your max used ssd space at around 80-85% of whatever disk management says its total space is. If Windows reports your 120gb ssd as 111gb, then dont allow more than about 90gb used. If pagefile.sys is on the ssd you could allow about 10-12gb more, of unused space. Or you can manage pagefile to use less, or none, of the ssd..

Thank you! :) I've left 40gb free space :) (out of 111gb) should be enough, and bought a 7200rpm 16mb cache 320gb HDD, is that a good HDD?

That will be plenty. Still get your drivers from the manufactuer's and if you have Windows update to notify you before it downloads any, then you can uncheck the unwanted ones.
