Okay, this isn't really easy.

My WinXP Pro is crapping out on me, so I need to reformat. Now, I have several OSes. I do not wish to use Windows XP system, nor the 2k3. Windows 2000 is painfully slow, and he earlier versions are a pure joke to use.

Now, I have either Vista, Linux or a MAC OS. (The PC will work great, but I need a sound card for the MAC and for Vista, I need the onboard)

I play WOW and UT2004, as long as some old school console games (Those games aren't really useful nowdays.) I usually do internet and e-mail also, so that's really useful.

Now, the problem comes here: Ventrillo. I need this program in order to talk while in WOW. For Windows, that's no problem, but Linux or MAC, I haven't done searches, to see if it has a version (Graphical...I hate text, unless it's graphical text)

Now, here's the deal: I can get Cedega for Linux, no problem, and for MAC, I think the CDs for WOW has the MAC, but for UT2004, Linux seems to be better, as it comes with Linux installers.

So...here's my dilema. If I use Linux with Cedega, I NEED good FPS.

Here's the questions:

If I stick with Vista, am I doing good?
If I go on Linux with Cedega, what POWERFUL and memory friendly (OpenSuse eats 900MB RAM!) Linux distro supporting Cedega and Ventrillo is good? (XGL, I don't need, just a graphical interface with Xorg or similar)
If I go on a MAC, I lose my NIC, so I need to get one more...ugh.

I'll facilitate you with my specs:
Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHZ (S478)
1GB RAM DDR400
ATI Radeon 9600Pro 256MB (400/446 stock)
160GB HDD
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (Vista will lock up with this card)
Firewire card
NU DDW-82 DVD burner (Bargain!)

I do not and will never OC my machines.

Also, don't choose an OS because YOU like it, nor annoy me with "Get a MAC". OS Enthusiastics is not a really good source of choice if I can find better and MACs are just useless for me.

I voted Linux.

You're a prime candidate for a move to Linux as you're having problems / not keen on various windows versions.

I know WOW runs under Cedega but I don't know the details about voice chatting in game. Best place to ask would be here

UT2004 runs perfectly under Linux, check your game disc, I have the DVD version and it came with the Linux installer. If anything it seems to run faster for me under Linux than it did under XP.

openSUSE doesn't actually use 900Mb, it only needs 256Mb of memory, however if you are not keen on openSUSE then Ubuntu would be a good choice and you could try out the newly released 7.04.

EDIT: Found an old thread on Ventrillo and Cedgea: http://transgaming.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6129&highlight=ventrillo

Why dont you just run 2 OSs on different partitions instead of trying to pick one over the other.

Probably because it's a royal pain rebooting to use another OS. I did that when I first started using Linux, I kept XP for gaming. I got sick of rebooting all the time to swap OS's.

stick with vista, most people in the world use microsoft so you'll have less compatibility issues. just my opinion though.

i'd stay XP.

Your previous installation of xp didn't "CRAP OUT" on it's own.

just don't mess the next one up, and it will run better than any of the other o/s listed for a long time. i

On a side note, i hope you get busted for owning and operating pirated operating systems, because as much as i dislike apple, i don't think they deserve to have their o/s stolen, and as there's no legit copy of osx that will install on a pc, there's 0 doubt in my mind that it's a pirated copy.
