filtration?

I was just wondering what everybody does to keep all the dust out of their pc? My fan was running more and more and I took my cover off and then took my cpu fan off and my heat sink was just caked with dust...not good! I vacumed it all out and now my fan only turns on when I am running alot of cpu intensive programs! I was wondering if anyone had any tips or sugestions? I was thinking of trying to put some kind of filters in it but I dont want to block air flow either! Does anyone know of any good filters or something I could buy online to help with this problem?

alright thank you I am going to get one of them...but I have to disagree with you on the fact that dust is a problem because all the fins on my heat sink was caked and would not allow air flow through and my fan would kick on like every 3 or 4 minutes and since I cleaned it out it only comes on when I am running heavy cpu loads...JMO!

Ok, glad to help. I dont bother with filters because i hoover out my case and put new paste on every week so its not really a porblem.

whilst thiose fans you linked do filter alot of dust, you need to clean them every couple of days. obviously that dpeneds on how much dust you have in the room. the only problem with them is that they restrict air flow by quite a bit.

and saying dust isnt a problem was a bit stupid. if your case has dust in it, the temp will rise, which isnt good

I meant it wasnt a problem for me, i dont regard it as a hinderance as i hoover and clean my case every weekend. Anyway, back on topic..... Yes the filters will restrict airflow and may well increase noise quite a bit too. Its really up to you what you want, less dust but more noise and possibly higher temps or lots of duct but lower noise levels.........????

Is there any way of keeping the dust out without restricting the airflow? I am not trying to fix one problem and create another...lol!

Not really, no. The filters will keep the dust out, there sint anything else that can do that, you could try to fit an extremely fine mesh around the outside of the heatsink to stop dust getting in there but then it will eventually prevent airflow, you would still have to clear it out every week.

it doesnt restrict the flow too much, although it does get worse when more dust is caught.

Yes, i clean it every week. Whats wrong with that, and yes i replace my thermal paste every week. It keeps things clean and tidy and working at their best.

Thats impressive mate, didnt say their was anything wrong with it just i dont usually get time. You must get through some sort of thermal paste, surely cant be good to remove the HSF every week?

Can't understand why you would re-apply your thermal grease every week. It doesn't get "dirty"... and takes time to break in.

I bought a bulk load of thermal paste off ebay for a couple of quid, really cheap. i got nothing else better to do with my time.

Fair enough, though dont think this would be good moving the HSF all the time. Not designed for constent movement like that. But at least your honest.
