Final Graphics Card Question

Hello. I have asked many, many questions about gpu's in the past and I have recieved many wonderful answers. I'll try to make this my last.

Orignially, I set out to build a quite cheap machine, using a 8600GT. Since then, people more experienced than I have pointed out that it basically sucks, or at least for the idea of it being able to play future games. Now that I have learned more and more, I can see that clearly. Thanks for the help, by the way! I have narrowed it down to two different cards; the HD3850 512mb or the 8800GT 512mb.I know that the 8800 is a much better performer, but the 3850 is still great and it's only 180 or so, opposed to 240. I won't be gaming over 1280X1024 (17" lcd) resolution, as that's my monitor's native resolution.

In the future, do you see the 3850 being able to play games good? The 8800 is quite a bit more than I'd like to spend, but if the 3850 will be useless in a year, I would have wasted the $180. I know that the 8800 still beats it in performance, but at that low resolution, couldn't the 3850 still keep up with what's comming out, even if it plays at medium or so? I just want a card that can handle some explosions and ten car pile-ups in games, and not lag up. I'm just using an integrated at the moment. Thanks for the help, and thanks for the help in the past!

Hard decision. It just depends on how long you're going to push it. The 3850 will of course show it's age faster than the GT, but that you're gaming on a medium resolution, and are willing to play on less than maxed settings will prolong it's life.

I would personally save up the extra to get GT. But the 3850 is a good card for the money. And you can get one for even less if it suits your fancy;

If you sign up for a newegg acct. and make sure to check the box asking if you want to become a subscriber, and receive deals, then wait 24 hrs, you can use promo code "EMCACBEBJ" when checking out with the above card to get a further 20 taken off. Making it $150. It is only a 256mb version, and even gaming at your res, it's becoming insufficient in certain games. But it won't become a terrible bottleneck overnight.

Hey, thanks for the response. You always help me, I appreciate it!

What do you mean "longer life?" Do you mean physically, or usefulness? Thanks.

No hay problema :)

Yeah, it's usefulness. They'll both be worlds better than onboard, and whatever you end up choosing, realize you'll get quite abit of use out of it, and for quite awhile. My lack of prescience disallows further commentary, I can't tell you exactly when things are going to go down.. unfortunately.

Oh and don't hesitate to ask new questions, when you need to. We don't mind, always learning new things, wouldn't be able to do that if the questions were never asked.

You won't get any flak from me. :D

Nah, just the above diamond card. I don't think the visiontek and the diamond are all that different though. If you're considering the 8800gt, after all, keep and eye on Slickdeals. Every once in a while you'll come acrossed a cheap GT, I've seen them sub $200 at times.

Not according to Anadtech benchmarks, close though. Some people say that ATI card s sport better image quality, I don't buy it personally, having used both. It is true that nvidia might cheat on their drivers to get better frames in certain games, though it's only ever been subject to conjecture in Crysis. Hell, ATI might do the same. They're both just out for market share.
