Final touches to a build

Just a couple questions:

Should I go for the i7-2600k? for only $314 it seems like an awesome deal. And from what I'm reading it can even out perform the much higher priced, older i7's. Is that true??

Also is Intel planning on sticking with the LGA 1155 socket for their higher end processors later this year? I'd like this rig to be upgradeable later in life.

And last question.

Right now, for the price, an HD6950 seems like the best deal at $274. I can easily bump the budget up to $300. Is there another graphics card that would be better as a stand alone (no SLI)? This is all for my army friend. He's given me the money and trusts that I'll build him something that can easily play any game that comes out for a while.

EDIT: if I do go for the 2600 that'll actually save about $200 off the whole thing so that can be put towards a better video card if there is one worth spending that much on.

What does he want the computer for?
I am assuming since you are bent on getting a Good GPU.

I would suggest you go with a Intel Core i5 2500k which is more than enough for gaming and also outperforms the Older i7s Hexcore in GAMING.

A Core i5 2500k + A P67 Motherboard will be good.
As for GPU it is true that you might be able to shader unlock the HD6950 and then set the clocks to HD 6970s clocks and get similar performance, but if you do not want to risk that then try GTX 570.
It is an amazing card and performs better than the HD 6950.

As for Memory 4GB of DDR3 1600MHz would be good.And a 550W PSU.

I would say core i5 2500K is better value for money.

Intel will have LGA 2011 later for high end market, but 1155 still continous

For video under $300, 6950 2Gb will be the one.

Agree with daisy and mihir.
Go 2500k, 6950 2GB.
Iv had no problems with my 6850 at all MAXING any game including Crysis 2, so the 6950 will be fine. And get the 2500k to save 100 and it OC and performs just as well as the 2600k. :D Good Luck!

All right, I'm going with the 2500k with an appropriate MOBO, which leaves me $500 for the video card. What would the suggestions be there?

And since this isn't my pc, I won't be overclocking or unlocking the BIOS on a 6950 so I'm working with stock speeds

I would go with the 6950's, however I wouldn't crossfire them. Get just one and bank the rest of the money for future upgrade. Just the one will destroy any game you throw at it, any extra would just be a monumental waste of money

True, but If i had that money id Crossfire just to enhance my geekness!...lol!

But yes your true in that a 6950 performs just as well with todays games and games to come for a while. :)

Don't forget resale value too. $250 now + $250 in the bank = $250 later + at least $150 from the sale of the card, so straight away, you are jumping onto the best of the best card again, without putting a single penny extra in
