Finally made decision and ordered all parts...comments and suggestions welcome

Hello all...I just bought all of the parts to replace (not upgrade) the AMD rig you see in my sig (home use/moderate gaming) and I am awaiting everything in the mail now. Specs are as follows....

- Intel Pentium 4 650 Prescott (3.4GHz)
- Generic motherboard...nothing special, 2 PCI slots, 1 PCI-Express slot, 4 memory slots...does the trick
- 1 GB (512x2) of DDR2-667, upgrade to 2GB down the road
- 7900GT graphics card
- Antec 500watt PSU
- Turtle Beach 5.1 sound card
- 120 GB hard drive/Dual DVD-ROM/Windows XP

And it's going in the case attached in the file. I've already ordered everything so any advice is appreciated but changing parts is not an option at this point. You guys think this will hang for the remaining days of DX9? And also do you think I need another GB of RAM? When I go dual core/8000 series/DX10 it'll be a different build, this one's staying like this, I don't know if I need 2GB for the games that are out right now. Comments? Thanks guys.

yeahh. Not bad at all. It is ok. The case is really khool. I wish if i could have one like that
 
I hate to burst your bubble, but that's really not an "upgrade". The two processors benchmark at nearly the same levels. And if I'm not mistaken, don't the Prescott have a bit of a heat issue?

Personally, I would of just stuck with the AMD, perhaps upgrade to a dual core...

Yeah, I know that... but the C2D is a better choice in performance by far, especially when he intends to use VISTA and the speed is incredible.

Makes you want to put your finger down your throat to barf up XP!
 
Hold up guys, before anyone blows a fuse I already have a Core 2 Duo rig! This is to replace the AMD box, not upgrade it, not hang with a dual core rig, just simply replace a 3800+ set up. I'm going to take the sound and video card out of my AMD machine and put it in the C2D so I'll have an E6400/7900GS/2GB rig. The box I'm making now is to replace the AMD rig in my signature, not greatly exceed the expectations of it. This is just for home use and moderate gaming until I build something serious when DX10 becomes relevant to what I do. Plus I want some of the parts from that thing for my C2D machine. I appreciate the comments but wow it's like a Core 2 Duo party around here, lol. I've used Vista and XP...sticking to XP for now.

I was thinking I would parallel the performance of the 3800+ machine with this new rig. The more I am learning about the chip it's probably not going to exceed the performance of the 3800+. At least I'll have some faster memory and a better video card though. It's just temporary.

So, do you intend to build an C2D rig out of your AMD???

It gets confusing what you intend to do and asking us what you wanted? Because it seems you ordered a P4 650 Prescott cpu, etc. If you want to build a C2D - the board and processor isn't going to work for that... or am I missing something here?:confused:
 
No you're not missing anything. The E6400 rig is up and running and 100% functional. The problem is it has an X1300 video card and a generic power supply. When I pull the AMD thing apart I'm going to take the 500 watt PSU, the 7900GS, and the sound card and stick it in the CD2 rig. Then I'll have a good graphics and sound card in that thing. The AMD rig is old but the PSU and video card are 6 months old. This will leave me with no home use computer for internet/word processing/light to moderate gaming though, so I threw what you see above together to replace the 3800+ machine.

On second thoughts though this new rig might get the 7900GS and I might use the 7900GT in the CD2 rig.

That makes more sense... So you are replacing the components above for your home system - why were you looking at the - Intel Pentium 4 650 Prescott (3.4GHz)? If you intend to use a C2D CPU? They are different you know that?
 
As others haver said, thats not much of an upgrade at all.

Why you went from a 7900GS to a 7900GT is beyond me.

And why the heck did you downgrade your sound card?

I have three different computers, one at work and two at my two residences. The work computer is basically irrelevant so just ignore that one. I have a CD2 machine already and it's up and running, 100% functional, already built. That's the one that's getting the video card and such out of the AMD machine that I am taking apart.

Now we get to replacing this dismantled AMD machine, this is where the Pentium 4 650 comes into play. I was going to build a box with a Pentium 4 650 to replace the AMD box that's old. I had ordered all of the parts that I listed at the beginning of the post. But to confuse things even more read this...

I think when people hear "replace" they automatically think "upgrade". I'm simply trying to replace what I have, not upgrade from it. Not upgrade not upgrade. :D

This all relates back to the parts swap I'm doing with the Core 2 Duo rig. The CD2 is getting the Audigy 4 I have in the AMD box. The CD2 machine is the one I'm focusing on. Where this new machine will be is an apartment so it will either have 2.0 or 2.1 speakers with the bass and volume at a reasonable level so I don't need a good sound card in there. Also the CD2 is getting the 7900GS so I needed another video card for this new rig. After ordering the 7900GT (actually changed the order to a 7950GT today) I figured it would make more sense to use that one in the CD2 rig and the 7900GS in the low end computer that was supposed to get the Pentium 4. However if you read the link above I changed the order to an Athlon 4000+/DDR2-800/7950GT set up instead and also ordered another Audigy 4. It's just for basic home computing, I'm not trying to upgrade substantially from what I had.
