so i have decided to get myself a laptop for college.

my dad is gonna send me AU $600 so thats pretty much my budget. if i sell some stuff i may be able to reach AU $700.

so basically i need to find a laptop that i want.

i have been looking around for a while and think that a dell would be nice. but the cheapest are slightly out of my price range.

what would everyone here recommend?

also i found this on ebay.

the guy selling it has good feedback so it doesnt seem like a scam... but 3.06 ghz? as if. for that price... whats the catch? can someone please enlighten me?

thanks

i have found that my best option is the dell vostro 1000.

it will cost me 650.
here are the specs. is it any good?
untitled-10.jpg

it has a Mobile Amd sempron 3600+ (

is that decently fast? what about compared to a 1.6 ghz intel mobile cpu? or what would be its equivelent?

so they are actually good? it just seems strange that a 3 ghz cpu could be in amongst the prices of the 1.6

ok so basically heres the decision i have to make.

do i get.

1. Brand new system. dell vostro. pretty much all i need. and its NEW and under warranty.

hahahaha

2. Ebay Laptop. better performance and parts... but old. second hand. anything could be wrong with it... no warranty. not as much fun to open cos its not brand new... cant brag as much.

haha so do i go performance or reliability?

im thinking 1. would be much better.

who else agrees?

and can i do better then a dell vostro for 650?

I always try to stay away from Dell when it comes to laptops, don't get me wrong they are nice ones, but I'm an Asus fanboy when it comes to lapops now a days. However, I'd look around a little bit more on newegg and stuff to see maybe if another one would strike your fancy.

My Mums Vostro 1000 has a Sempron 3600+ inside of it, and it is quite fast on Vista scoring in at 4.0

well i cant afford much. a cheap dell is it if i want a new one.

yeah for some reason when i go to the dell vostro with diff ways i can customize it with a 3600 or sometimes only intel... but im not sure how i managed that... maybe the 3600 was on the US site and the intels are on the aussie site?

would an intel processor with the same vostro be as powerful as the 3600? i think it was a centrino 1.8

yeah i know how no idea how i managed to find the intel cpu one haha.

well it looks like my best option right?

is there anything that i might want to upgrade? like how much better is a 9-cell battery compared to a 6-cell?

like how much longer would it last?

thanks :)

A 9 cell holds more battery but it's usually bigger and/or heavier. I have a 6-cell on my laptop (Core Duo T2350, nVidia 7400, 2GB RAM etc) and it lasta around and hour and a half when typing word documents.

ok well i just found a Compaq Presario for AU$638

1.8 ghz celeron m

512 mb ram (ill be running xp.. but ill try to find some more anyway)

webcam haha

80 gig hard drive.

so its pretty much perfect and local :)

anything you guys think might be a problem?

thanks

If you want something fast do not go for celeron or semperon otherwise yr ****ed up with a bottle neck system.
My advice = What do you need it for.
Pretty much you should get a macbook;)

its a laptop. im not expecting fast. remember that im not gonna use this for anything more demanding then iTunes :)

well i just realised that the compaq presario is $740 with $150 cashback.

so is cashback 100% safe? hahaha
what i mean is... ill have to like send something to them and they'll send me back a cheque right?
is there any chance that i might not get it?
cos i may be able to get someone to lend me the 150 extra ill need to buy it... but yeah. otherwise ill go into debt hahah.

I wouldn't get the compaq it looks cheap and feals it to...

The Vostro looks good, and will suit your needs perfectly fine...

Go the Vostro
