Finding the location of an IP address (nothing nefarious)?

Is there any way to find out what city an IP address is in with a lot of confidence (or something more specific than that)?

Not doing this for any nefarious reasons, I did an online survey over Surveygizmo of various institutions and I need to know which institution each response is coming from. One response did not identify itself so I've no way of knowing where it came from, but I really need to. If I can find out the city I could know where its from.

What's my IP tells me, about this IP:

"Assignemnt: Dynamic IP"

Is that reliable? How can it know that the IP is dynamic?

Just Google an ip address searcher. You then enter the ip address you want and it should give you a general area.

That puts my location in the wrong city. Interestingly another site I tried put my location in the same wrong city.

I suspect one can't expect the kind of reliability that I'm looking for from these things.

You aren't guaranteed to get an exact location every time. It's usually within about 50 miles.

Guess it all depends where you are and how your ISP is setup, from personal experience I can tell you they can be very far out. I'm in Tenerife and until recently my IP came up as being from a Spanish ISP but in Morocco Casablanca, so not even in the same country. Due to upgrades in infrastructure on the Island my IP now comes up saying I'm in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so the right country, but still the other side of the Island over 100km away.

Well, upon reading. you may choose the whois lookup. It will reveal name of the ISP who owns the IP address, and the country where it is originated from. In addition to it, you might find the city of origin also. One thing more, an IP address lookup tool will help you track the ip address location, and this locator tool will reveal the ip address, country flag and even the map location.
