Finding the right CPU

I've been looking for a processor and I am a little confused on which one to get. I'l look at this CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103759 And see that it's pretty good. And while I look at the Intel dual core equivalent (GHZ wise) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115002 I'll see that the Intel is almost 300$ more. Now the only thing I noticed was the Cache and the AMD didn't show the FSB but had HT in it's place. I'm confused on what the differences are and why the price difference. I would also like to know which processor would probably the best on the market for around 250$ maximum. I also forgot to mention that I intend using this computer for gaming.
 
I core 2 is faster mhz vs. mhz. It would take a X2 6000 is be (some what) equal to a Core 2 6700 at stock clocks. But 200 bucks is not bad for a X2 5200

ok look at the E6400

This is deffinately more on par with the x2 5200+ and around the same price the E6400 is $17 more in benchmarks from tomshardware.com they didn't have the x2 5200+ so i based it on the next one up which is x2 5600+ which is 2.8ghz compared to the x2 5200+ which is 2.6ghz and in most benchmarks its performs only slightly better than the E6400 so i suspect the the x2 5200 and E6400 are pretty much on par.

Now if it was for me. I would choose the E6400. Why might you ask when its $17 more, because the Core 2 duo's are highly overclockable compared to the athlon's.

but if ur not into overclocking then it doesn't really matter but just remember there might be that day that u just want to overclock or when u feel ur computers too slow.

My E6400 is running at 3.2ghz thats a 1.07ghz increase in performance(2.13ghz stock), and it was dam easy for me to overclock it to 3.2ghz no voltage up's and the temptures are staying the same as stock temps.

I had a x2 4800+(2.4ghz) before this rig(in sig) and i could only overclock it to 2.6ghz before i had to do some voltage up's and stuff :( only a 200 mhz overclock. and since the x2 5200+ are in the same family chances are even if u did get a good one it won't be 2 much higher.

so with a Overclocked E6400 It'll deffinately Out perform the x2 5200+ by a mile.
 
Get the 5200 X2. The E6700 is a bit better (about 10%/15% on average). This is simply not enough to justify spending $300 (150%) extra.

Don't forget you need a motherboard (5200 needs AM2 mobo, E6700 needs S775 mobo [not all S775 mobos accept C2D's]). The 300% you save getting a 5200 allows you to get a very nice graphics card.

EDIT: I'm sure that if he was intending on overclocking the CPU, he wouldn't actually be asking this question.
