I'm not sure if this has anything to do with internet speed, but Firefox has been acting very strange on my laptop (Win 7 Home) for the last two days. The laptop is brand new, just bought it a few days ago.
Symptoms include:
- Downloads take VERY long to complete (around 10 times longer than the estimated time written on the download window), however the speed is NORMAL (might even be faster than when it was on Win XP). Basically it will say something like "3 minutes remaining --- 10.0mb out of 30.0mb (600kb/sec)", however the 9 seconds out of 10 it is actually not downloading as the progress does not move. Every so often it will download a bit at the 600kb/sec, so in total it takes like 10 times longer than the estimated 3 minutes. The download does not fail
- Scripts run slower: stuff like countdown timers on download sites such as Megaupload count down much slower, so instead of taking 30 seconds for a 30 second timer, now it takes like 2 minutes to count down 30 seconds; another example is certain web pages with lots of scripts loading much slower and failing to load more often, as well as the little loading icon (the green swirly rotating thing) on webpage tabs at the top now have very laggy animation, instead of the usual smooth rotating animation
The only change I made to the laptop these few days is download a theme for Firefox, and add an entry in registry editor in order to disable auto-restart upon Windows Update:
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
- Create new key WindowsUpdate under Windows
- Create new key AU under WindowsUpdate
- Create new 32-bit DWORD called NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers with hexadecimal value data of 1
There shouldn't be anything wrong with my internet as I'm able to play MMORPGs smoothly without any connection problems.
Does anyone know what's wrong and what I should do? Thanks.
