Firefox + Explorer displays nothing

Greetings all,

Unique problem i have encountered with a friends computer. She has both firefox version 5.0 and explorer in her computer. She also has DSL and i have broadband internet with both browsers as mentioned. she has plenty of ram, processor speed, hd space, etc as well as I do and both of us run WINXP PRO. (I know that there is an updated version for Firefox but, that shouldn't be an issue here).

The problem is i can view sites as "Craig's list" when i click on an ad link contained therein but, when she does it, she gets a BLANK PAGE - no picts displayed, etc...even when attempting to open the link in a new page and not the same one.

I set the computer up for her and cannot figure out why this is happening...Could this be something concerning JAVA (i think it it installed but, shut off(?)....I am out of ideas....Can anyone point me in the correct direction here?.....THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY HELP!.

Try updating her browser, Firefox 5 is ancient. It could also be Craigslist's issue, is this the only site this problem is showing up on?

...thanks for the reply. HOWEVER, if you read what i wrote, this should not make a difference in that i have the exact same version browser and my computer displays all images and text fine so, this could not be the issue. It is also not a craigs list issue in that my computer, accessing the net and craigs at the same time, displays fine so, "craigs list issue" is not it. I am going to reasonably assume it is a computer issue.

....To note, i tried with her computer (and mine), accessing craigs at same time and got the same results. I have no pop up blockers initiated and, i uninstalled java - reinstalled - and did update and still have problem.

I can only assume its a setting in the hosts file that not allowing access to the site or its possible someone has disable access to that website in the router. Do you have her system at your house? If it can access craiglists there then its a setting in the router at her place. If it still can't access craiglists at your place then I can only assume its a hosts file setting.

host file?...huh?

that not allowing access to the site or its possible someone has disable access to that website in the router.
if i can recall correctly, there is a wireless laptop used by someone else in the household that can access the site - i will verify that shortly.

Do you have her system at your house?
no, but, i can access it remotely with her permission of course.

If it can access craiglists
it CAN access craigs and see the "links" posted for ads however, when clicking on the ads the pages/picts comes up total blank.

there then its a setting in the router at her place. If it still can't access craiglists at your place then I can only assume its a hosts file setting.
what is a "host file setting"?

Ok. I guess we didn't understand you completely. So it can access craigslist but just ads just won't come up? I can't understand why the actual ads aren't appearing. Doesn't look like java or flash is required for the ads.

correct!...when you see an ad posted for an item for sale and you click on it, the page will change but, nothing will be displayed at all. This happens even if one right clicks on the ad and one selects "open in new page". Again, this happens in both explorer and Firefox. This does not happen in my computer and we have same versions, etc. I called her a few min ago and she is in church so, will be a bit before i can get someone to turn on her computer that i may access it and re-look at settings contained.

neither can i!...First time i have ever run into a problem as this. I hedged my bets and uninstalled java and reinstalled same regardless if it was a problem or not. I am at a loss. I could see if it was Explorer or just Firefox but, not both. I dropped firewalls and anti-virus programs and got the same results.

I wouldn't continue to use Firefox 5 if I were you - it has a lot of security flaws and the latest version (Firefox 18) is much better and more secure.

And that's if you have to use Firefox, Google Chrome is spectacular.

...I have seen the new version of firefox and in my opinion is $ucks x 10 so, gonna stick with the old and a decent anti virus program. I tried Chrome for a day and uninstalled it a long time ago.

I agree, I hate Firefox with a passion.

However, Chrome is awesome right now. When was the last time you tried it?
