firefox memory hog on mac

I am having this issue with firefox on my mac when i check the processes running firefox consumes 171 mb of memory. It does not slow my computer or anything but it is annoying and would like to reduce the memory usage.

My mac specs

2.4 ghz core 2 duo
4 gb ram ddr3
256 mb of ddr3 sdram shared with memory

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Do you have any add-ons/plugins for FireFox? Does it use that much memory as soon as it starts up, or after it's running a while? I know on my windows and linux versions of FF, the longer I have it running and the more sites I visit, the more memory it uses... starts of using around 40K and will get up to 120K+ before I think to shut it down... it's got what some refer to as "memory leaks" - the only cure I've found is to restart it once in a while...

Have you tried reinstalling it? Installing the latest version? What's wrong with using Safari? Or Opera?

I really do not have that much addons for firefox because some of the addons that are compatabile on my windows system do not install on my mac browser. Firefox does not reach that much memory usage when i start it but for example when i go to few sites then it will start to hog my mem.

That seems about normal, OS X handles memory differently than Windows.

Could be worse. If I run Opera for too long (on Windows/Linux, mind you), it can take up as much as 500MB. That's half of my system's RAM.
