No, but there are programs that will block sites/and types of sites. Is that what you are looking for? I dont know of any free softwares which will completely block sites, especially in the way you described.

Firefox is just a browser, it cant do everything. Though there are add-ons for Firefox that will alert you to whether or not a site is relatively safe, WOT for instance. However WOT will not stop you from entering the site.
 
my concern isnt really about viruses. i was looking for something similar to a parental controls for the browser. oh well :(

perhaps other browsers might have what i am looking for, perhaps its time to try safari.

I dont believe any browsers offer what you want. I may be wrong about safari though since I haven't used it yet, but I highly doubt it has what you want. I have used Firefox, Opera, I.E. and Chrome and I haven't seen what you are asking for in any of those browsers.

Why not just buy a parental control program. I have a parental control included with my Anti-Virus and I like having it. I've blocked violent, gambling, suspicious, file sharing, (etc....) sites from even being displayed.

I don't believe any anti-virus providers offer what you desire in a free package. However, there are many paid versions of popular internet-security-anti-virus programs do offer this.
Such as:
  • Trend Micro
  • Avira
  • Norton
  • Kaspersky
  • Macafee
  • CA Technologies

There are also parental protection programs for sale. You really aren't going to get a program like this for free. You could check out this list made by Top-Ten Reviews this year for parental control programs, here: Internet Filter Review

Sorry that I cant tell you exactly which one is best, I've not used any of the standalone programs. I have Trend Micro Anti-virus and it came with a parental control with it.

What I can tell you that parental control programs aren't just for parents limiting their kids. For instance, I find it immensely useful having a program which will weed out bad/unwanted/undesirable websites (spam, illegal, hate, violence, porn, etc.... from even appearing). It helps me keep my computer that much more safe and infection free.
 
Yeah, those may block dangerous sites. But they dont seem to offer a more comprehensive protection which would come from a dedicated software. software like Net Nanny seems to do more to prevent kids from doing things they shouldnt. I've had kids, so I know that they will find SOME way of getting around anthing a parent puts in their way. In this case they may just go to a friends home to lookup what they want.
