hi, i've been using firefox for a long time without any problems but recently it stopped working every tme i try to open it i get the following error message:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\xul.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact the system administrator or the software vendor for support.

i tried installing it again but it still happens. any idea how this can be fixed?

I'd use CCleaner to uninstall it, then run the registry cleaner in CCleaner, redownload the firefox install and try again.

Re: firefox

I am also using Firefox on my machine.
Well, you should uninstall it first by using Add/remove options of control panel of your system. And then try to reinstall it. Or you might get a latest version of this browser at http://www.mozilla.com
:)

I had the same problem a couple of days ago. I uninstalled it first then reinstall the whole program. That's the rule of the thumb.

Lately Mozilla have been releasing very un-reliable versions/updates of Firefox...all it does it keep crashing for me too.

Ive since gone to Oldapps.com and downloaded a older version of firefox,Its not crashed once since i installed it so id recommend downgrading to a previous version if crashing has become a problem for you too.

Im using version 3.0.18 :P...just make sure you turn off Auto update in firefox control panel or it will update itself again.

I think Mozilla is in danger of creating "Bloatware", they are putting so much into their browser it just cannot keep it's speed title it use to have. So many "add-ons" are now interacting in a way they were not meant to and creating an unstable browser and Chrome will go the same way as more people demand the same from it.

All browsers started out "speedy" and it is the user who wanted to do everything from their browser that created the instability and slowdown.

hmmm, i tried uninstalling it using add/remove programs and CCleaner and it doesn't seem to want to be ininstalled. it just flashes up with a black window then nothing happens. what else can i try?

also not sure if this is related but my google chrome stopped working a while back aswell. when i try to open it i get the same black window as when i try to uninstall firefox and the icon has changed.

What about the other browsers? If the uninstalling and reinstalling didnt work, and since you mentioned that google chrome stopped working as well maybe your pc is infected with a virus. Try running your anti virus scanner.

I too encountered the firefox problem after I upgraded it.

Hi Mate

I suggest you uninstall Firefox by removing from Add/Remove programs from control panel and install it again and check wheather it works. If not install some other browsers like Internet Explorer or Safari and see it.If those browsers work then the problem is with FireFox you have or else your computer might have struck with virus and you need to format the system.

i appreciate your suggestion but if you read the rest of the thread you'd have seen that i already tried uninstalling it using the method you suggest and CCleaner and it won't be uninstalled. i also ran a virus scan which found nothing and google chrome stopped working shortly after firefox so i'm stuck on internet explorer for the moment. thanks anyway though
