Firewall errors

I am at my college right now and I have no idea what is going on with the network here. At first, limewire would connect and everything and it would work fine. Then it stopped being able to connect and would always give me errors about the computer not having an internet connection (which it clearly does) or being behind a firewall. I then went and changed the listening port to one that was working for BitTorrent, and then it was connecting again. It worked for a few days, and now it isn't connecting anymore.

Is there any way for me to get it to work? I don't know what the problem is really. I don't know a lot about firewalls or big networks (like a college network) so...I am kind of lost about it. I know two things can't use the same port at the same time, like both BitTorrent and Limewire, but I was just trying to run one at a time. Also, I just tested BitTorrent and it connects using the same port I had set for Limewire.

BitTorrent is probably against the rules at your college, and I would think they noticed a large portion of bandwidth was going to you or others. So, they probably blocked most/all ports from the router. It obviously worked.

I am having the same problem btw, just at home. I can still download but VERRY slowly.

BitTorrent works here. I havent heard anything about it being against rules but I havent looked either. It works using a port that is no longer working for Limewire. Shouldn't limewire be able to use that port if BitTorrent does? So shouldn't they both work if one does?

Well I bet I know what happened, and how you can fix it. I assume they saw that there was some file sharing going on with your ip (which may be bad).. Anyway they shut down the first port. Then you changed it, and they noticed that aswell. What I would do is try using 80 (which is the default web browser port) or 1080.. If you want to keep downloading then just keep changing the port you use. This does not mean they wont come and talk to you though. Good luck.

But that doesn't seem to be the case if BitTorrent is still working. It works on 6881. It has always worked. Limewire has had a few problems working..It did at the beginning of semester, then stopped. I changed the port to 6881 and then it worked again. Now it isn't working, but BitTorrent still works..

And yea I did just look at policies and we aren't allowed to use any server type programs like P2P stuff..but...yea..lol

Well that is fine, Just dont allow uploading... Then it is not a server... :) Do you have both application running at the same time? Bit torrent and limewire?

Yea I don't allow uploading. And no, I don't use both at the same time (I know a port cannot be used by both at the same time). So I dont know why BitTorrent will work and Limewire will not.

Is there any program (freeware) or website or anything that I can run and find out which ports are open and not blocked for me to use? If I do find/have an open port, should I be able to connect to limewire, etc. without problem? Or is there something else that could be going on with the network/firewall that could prevent me from connecting?

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Run the complete test. "All service ports"

I ran the test and got TruStealth..all ports reported as stealth and no packets were received or anything. Is this a bad thing for me?

If you want to keep downloading.. yes
