Firewall for mama

The top three free antivirus programs are AVG, Avast, and Antivir. You can download the latest version of AVG 7.5 and the AVG Anti-Spyware Free at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free The AVG antispyware program there is equal to Ewido 5.0 since Grisoft bought out Ewido.
The free for home use Avast is available at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

The Avira AntiVir is found at http://www.free-av.com/

These are the free to keep and much easier to use programs that see the best results. Other programs(retail) do get very involved like Symantec's Norton, McAFee, and the best of the those three Trend Micro's PC-cillin.

Norton's only good product is their corporate edition which runs in the background and takes up no memory, in the anti-virus field

Norton gets nothing but from many who have it or did have it on their systems from being resource hungry. Once a long... long... long time ago there was an old 486 machine with McAfee on it. But the great of Grisoft's free AVG saved the day on the next build. :D yes!

When AVG started catching other things besides pointing out where and which files had been infected with a virus like trojan downloaders. And then came a long list of adware and spyware removers that just sat on the drive and did nothing. :(

PC-cillin is on now for the month to see if that will work since it remains unchecked in the msconfig utility due to hampering dsl. At first it kept knocking out the internet connection forcing a reboot to get back on. But it does have a good bundle rolled into like a personal firewall and spam reporter along with antivirus and spyware/adware removal tools. So far working good now. :D

so the norton corporate edition is better than the regular edition. Why? Is it more effective and better.

I use the McAfee corporate version. I used to use Antivir, and switched to the McAfee(the corp. ed.), and I can not see any decline in the performance of my computer.

Once you grant access for all programs that need it ZONE ALARM is the way to go. She wouldn't even know it's there.

Trend Micro's PC-cilliin with everything rolled up there smears McAFee royally. I ran McAFee for quite a well and dumped it for not being effective. Hopefully they have made some "big" improvements since that time.

I ran Zone Alarm free with it's one active prompts and lack of too many things briefly. On Jetico I have only one complaint on that one so far. Comodo is another that seems to go over better with a few for a freeware.

Well, because my mama (only54) has had prior use with AVG and had no problems ive decided to get her AVG 7.5, now ive just got to scout around for a firewall.........................and yes ill have a look at Zone Alarm.

Thanx guys.

EDIT: Gone for Comodo, looked at a few reviews and it seems miles away the best (i hope so), just infront of Zone Alarm

I do agree that Norton is a resource hog, however it is pretty effective and very user friendly.

However I prefer AVG, because it's free, uses less of your computers resources, and is pretty easy to use.

i have McAfee Corporate 8.0i and i've never noticed it hogging resources unless it is running the balls to the walls virus-scan... but the regular on-access scan is very good... it catches viruses before they are downloaded and ran...

I have the same thing, and i totally agree with you. My system loads faster than when i had Windows LiveOnecare, and isnt slow

So Comodo doesn't get a rave review by that I take. AVG 7.5 will run easily there since it doesn't tie things up. The retail "secuorty suites" put out by Symantec and others can cause problems at times when they get intrusive. Just the 30day trial of PC-cillin has to be disabled in the msconfig utility to be able to stay connected online. It seems to have it's own "proxy"? There is one other freeware to point out that might work there.

Advanced WindowsCare Personal has been tried out here for a few weeks now without problems seen. It's a freeware cleanup utility but not a forewall. You can download that at http://www.download.com/Advanced-WindowsCare/3000-2086-10407614.html It's kind of a "one click" maintainence utility for Windows novices.
