Firewire Problems

What's up guys....
I recently spent around $600 worth of Pro Tools recording software and an M-Audio Firewire interface for it. My pc didn't have a firewire card, so I figured (after having made several other upgrades to this pc) I could just easily pick one up and install it...problem solved.NOPE. I install the pci card and when I go to boot, I get a repeated list of "plug%play error" So I take it out and everything works fine again. I figured my BIOS needs an update?

PC is a Dell Dimension 8200 BIOS info= Phoenix A03 12-07-01 on a Dell mobo...
The firewire card is a Belkin F5U503

So I go to Dell's website and they automatically select my BIOS update for me... I go to install it and it crashes my computer to the point of having to reformat to get into windows.I called them a few weeks back and they said they'd send me an update CD for the BIOS..it should have been here on Jan 25th...still don't have it.

My question is: Does it sound like the BIOS is really the problem? Or should I try something else? I don't want to have to go through all of this trouble to update the BIOS and still not get any results...thanks!

Have you simply tried another firewire card? Sometimes cards just aren't computable with systems. Plus, Belkin isn't exactly well known for their quality...

Nah, haven't tried another one, but at this point I might as well. I just didn't want to be out the price of two useless cards but I don't really care anymore. Can you suggest a brand of better quality or one that's more likely to work?
