First Boot Help

Hello all,

This is my first build. I am having some problems installing windows. I put the computer together and powered it up with the windows XP64 disk. I receive two error messages. Can't detect mass storage device. Process1 Initialization Failure. If I turned on the computer without the windows disk the computer freezes at "verifying DMI pool". I loaded puppy linux form my cd-rom and everything went fine. I also installed my brothers hard drive (already has puppy linux on the drive) and that worked fine. I just can't figure out how to install windows. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I built a computer with the following parts -

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 3.1GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor

ORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3P AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 500W ATX Power Supply

G Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD±R DVD Burner

Linux would load, because it is from the CD rom. I am thinking that there is a problem with your installation disk or your hard drive. You can scan the hard drive with this:

http://www.cagedwarfare.co.nr/admin/seatools_2.13_en.zip

Download it and burn it to a cd. Boot from CD, click I agree, then go to basic tests and hit long scan. It may take a while, but if it comes up with errors, send it back to the reseller or manufacturer. If it doesn't try and find a different install disk :)

It's my website, it just allows people to get the software without mandatory registration (and yes, Seagate allows webmasters to mirror the file).

I downloaded a similar program from Western Digital. According to the program my hard drive is fine. I created a new XP cd and had a bit more success. The setup is successful when formatting the drive coping the setup files. After the copy process, XP setup restarts the computer. I believe this is normal. At this point, when the computer turns back on, the XP install program should start to guide me through the rest of the installation but the computer displays "verifying DMI pool data" then a moment later it states "A disk read error has occured, Press Ctrl+alt+del to restart"

This is the 32 bit XP, i might need the 64 I am not a sure. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated

It is normal for the installation to restart the computer, but it is not normal for it to say that a read error occurred. The tool from Western Digital is called Data LifeGuard Diagnostic (probably version 5.04), but I guarantee that it does not work properly.

Seatools is a hell of a lot more reliable, even if the drive is not a seagate - and a lot more straight forward. I still recommend running a seatools scan before doing anything else.

And what do you mean "created a new XP CD"??? Did you download it or something, because if so that could be the root of all your problems. People messing about with distributions. . .
