First Build advice wanted

This will be my first attempt at building my own machine. I mostly play around with multi media and video.
I was looking for something that also offered a basis for future upgrades. I think I got all the needed parts! :)

Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks to all in this great educational forum.

LOL, yes, the most fundamental are the first forgotten :)

Always have run Win XP Pro but looks like I'm going to have to migrate to Vista Ultimate 64 bit to really make full use of the hardware. New things to learn!

Noticed you were running Word 7. What do you think of it?

12 gig of RAM.... only because it is cheap. Found it for $80 for 6 gig.

Debated going with less, faster memory but from what I've read in the forum it wouldn't make a noticeable difference for the increased cost.

I would rather have 6gb of fast RAM than 12gb of slightly slower RAM. Unless you are doing some serious rendering you will see no difference between 6gb and 12. However, you will notice a difference between slow RAM and fast.

vista 64-bit isnt a hard transition from xp in my experience. its really user friendly now that they fixed many of the compatibility errors. windows 7 is amazing and i'm gonna for sure get it when it comes out. i havent looked it up so dont hold me to it but i heard that if you buy vista now that microsoft will trade you for a windows 7 copy when it comes out. anybody else know more about that?

I've not heard that about Windows 7.

Also, about the RAM, at the EVGA forums where I hang out also, there
were alot of people complaining that my board wouldn't recognize DDR3
1600 RAM, it ran it at 1066.

Most of the overclockers there quoted benchmarks running the same
amount of RAM, but running at slower or faster speeds. (1066v1600)
and they all say that the difference is negligible.

Meaning you won't see a huge difference if you run either speed.

It may make a bigger difference with DDR2 with lower bus speeds
on the older boards, idk.

This is for my board, mind you, I'm not generalizing. Just throwing
it out there.

Looks like a great build man. If you have plans on overclocking then I would get faster ram but if you are leaving everything at stock speeds then the ram is not really going to come into play. Your setup will be very similar to mine and theres nothing I can't do with mine. I use 12gb for Virtual Machines, if you can get the ram cheap I say why not. There was a day when people thought 2 gb of ram was over kill and now most people build with atleast 4gb. Good luck on the build and make sure to report back to us on how everything goes :)
