First Build - Any Ideas?

Having read numerous other threads like this, i thought what the hell... I am planning to buy/build this system somewhere near the beggining of April giving me plenty of time to plan ahead :) The primary reason I am building this pc is to play games at a good standard. This is a rough idea of what i want and I will be happy to hear your views of any changes.

Case - Asus Vento 3600 (no PSU) - http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3MRJ

PSU - Not sure

Motherboard - Asus A8N SLI Premium - http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3RWF

CPU - AMD Athlon Dual Core 4200+ http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3R2R

GPU - 2x Gygabite 7800GT 256mb (SLI) http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3SJS

RAM - Not sure but want 1GB minimum

HDD - Seagate Barracuda 200GB UDMA 100 http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=32YK

Optical drives NEC DVD+-R/RW 16x Dual Layer http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3VPH And a floppy drive.

This should cost about 1,060GBP or $1,840

P.S. I will Buy a 19'' TFT, wireless keyboard and mouse and surround sound speakers sometime after i build the pc as my current ones will do for now.

Cheers,

Marskib

Total budget for the PC without Monitor etc is 1100 GBP but not set in stone. Ive heard that the 7800GTX is only a fraction faster than the 7800GT so wouldnt having 2 of them result in better performance? The ram seems a little expensive and isnt a 430W PSU too weak for this sort of system, especially if I want to have SLI?

one 7800gtx might only be a bit faster but it will play any game out right now and it will play any game out for a good time. so once u start getting some lag u can add another.

But bearing in mind the price difference, is it worthwhile. BTW i only intend on buying one GPU when i build the pc and buy the second a few months later.

Get a 500watt psu, with a min of 2gb if your budget allows. Because windows stops using the VM with 2gb ram. So that just about doubles speed

A single X1900XT will give performance similar to SLI'd 7800GTs, and is cheaper. It also doesn't require a SLI mobo.

I'd probably look at the TPII-480 or even the NeoHE500 myself (if you want to stay within the Antec range).

Never judge a PSU based solely on watts. Take a look at PSU101.

This is not how VM works. Having 2GB of RAM doesn't disable VM, and won't come close to doubling speed. You're only looking at a few FPS difference in most games.

Still in the dark as to what PSU and RAM to get. I want to stick to NVidia graphics cards, however. Still leaning towards 7800gt...

256mb or 512mb, because the cheapest 512mb i can find is 505gbp. I might consider one 256mb Gtx and another a few months later, but the 512mb is too expensive.

Ewww I hate that case but I guess its preference lol

Its a good board but it is overpriced IMHO

Like ceewi1 said thats a waste of money (SLI 7800GT), and by the time you want to add another GPU, theres a single card for the same price that can beat both of them. A single X1900XT would be a mich better choice valuewise.

or a 7900
Whats up about everyone talking about this card it doesnt even exist...

Giving us a total budget would help us fill in the undecided parts.

The case is the best bit :) My budget for when i actually order the parts and have a working pc is 880gbp which will be the initial purchase. I will then purchase other components as i get the money, for example, a second graphics card, which is why i need a graphics card that will play games until i buy a second one. In total i intend on spending about 1100GBP on the PC without extras (monitor, speakers etc). So, any suggestions?

Thats actually really cheap for all that, mine was a shade under £800, and its no way as good as that! (Mind you, I did buy a £100 PSU, took my 6800 Budget :D)
