Well I am gonna atempt my first build and pretty much ready to start picking up the parts but but Im going from a 3 year old Acer Laptop to a desk top and the componients all together is gonna cost around $1800.00 so now I would like to drop the price a little bit the CPU I chose is

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Processor BX80569Q9550 - 2.83GHz, 12MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB, Yorkfield, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket 775, Processor with Fan

I know you guys get this question often but every persons needs is different, and with all the options out there its too much for a basic person to sort out!

I mostly burn dvd's with video and picture editing and play the odd game (maybe more once I am free from the limitations of the laptop) but I dont know much about CPU's or other hardware at that so for $425.00CND can I get any suggestions on something a little bit cheaper but provide me with enough processor to future proof a couple of years. or should I stick with this and find other ways to cut down, to be honest I picked the CPU because the specs looked good so im not partial to it and open to suggestion with the execption of AMD! And please under $325.00

Thanks in advance!

If you grab a motherboard that is compatible with 45nm chips, I would, based on your uses, recommend my chip, the E8400 core2 duo, its a fabulous chip, 3ghz stock, easily overclockable and while nothing is future proof..this chip would serve you well for a good, long time.

And,,it's $200 or less in Canadian dollars!

I was going to recommend the same cpu.

I would stick with the quad core... its basically double the cores of a dual core chip at the same speed, and if you do video and picture editing, the multiple cores will help out alot if your software supports SMP. And if you are using SMP, a stock speed Q9550 will take roughly a 6Ghz dual core to process at the same speed.

another vote for the E8400.

amazing chip, almost too fast... even at the stock 3.0ghz.

overclock it to 4ghz and you will piss yourself laughing when you see the speed. can max every game out ATM

I say it depends on what your using it for.. Gaming Ill go with the E8400 for phote/movies editing go with a Q6600 or someother Quad core.. Hard choice man... Good luck:D

edit: future proof go with a Quad.. Q9XXX series with the higher core clocks.
