First Build From Scratch

Hi guys,

I'm new here but I've browsed around a lot without registering and it looks like you guys have a lot of knowledge. I'm looking to build my first PC from scratch. I've upgraded my old Dell (yeah, I know) and I finally saved enough to get a solid build (I think).

I've got $1200 to cover every piece of my equipment. I'm looking for full-build suggestions. I know the main parts (mobo, cpu, psu, heatsink, hdd, optical drives, ram, video card), but I will need anything else that I will need listed too.

I'm looking for a good gaming PC rig (ability to run high graphics on new games like SC2 and FPS), something with some power. I was looking into an i7/ATi combo, but I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
E

Hello again,

I've gone through newegg and I ended up putting this together. It looks about right. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and it comes out to just under $1300 with shipping, so it's not terribly over my budget. Am I missing anything though?

*Forgot OS* I assume it's about $110, so that puts me at $1410. I need to shave off about $100-$200. I'm thinking I can slide by on my old keyboard/mouse so that's $80 off the total but I'm still at $1330, $130 over my original budget. It all includes shipping so I'm willing to be a bit over, but not this much.

Thanks guys.

Oh! Also, I've got a MicroCenter about 20 minutes away from me, so that is definitely an option if they have better prices. I saw in another thread that they're offering the i7 930 for ~$200 in stores. That's another $90 off.

Please, all input is happily accepted.

You could always go with an AMD Phenom X4 processor (3.2 or 3.4Ghz version) for either $160 or $180, and pair that with a ~$100 AMD mobo. You would be saving a little bit on the cpu and $100 on the mobo that way. I realize going the AMD route might not be an option for you, but it would do wonders for your budget.

Other than the cpu and mobo, you'll just have go through your component list and sacrifice where you are willing to sacrifice. Willing to go with a cheaper case? Willing to go with cheaper peripherals? That sort of thing, personal taste sort of stuff.

MoBo/OS combo $300

Case $27 with tax/no shipping

saves $113

(or look at the Microcenter page for another cheap case. Getting it there saves you the shipping)

this is an open box Gigabyte case for $10 at the Detroit Microcenter. Use it until Christmas and get the case you really want then. For $10 this one is pretty much disposable. For now that would get you the $130 and you're not skimping on your hardware.

Thanks guys!

I went over to Microcenter today to just look around and try to piece together prices there. I talked to a guy there and, after reading more articles here, the AM3 seems a little more "futureproof". I'm thinking about getting a Phenom II X4 for $179.99 (saves $20), buying an Antec 300 for $49.99 (saves $69.99) and an ASUS mobo (pretty much an AM3 mobo) for $129.99 (saves almost $100) and that'll put me under by about $40 plus shipping.

Question on the mobo: will that support my equipment above? (ram, graphics card) Will it support crossfire in the future if I need it?

Yes, it will support your memory, video card, and crossfire if you choose to do that in the future.

Oh, and good decisions IMO concerning your changes. Going AM3 with that Phenom 2 X4 will do great for gaming, and you'll have Bulldozer to look forward to later on. Everyone seems to love the Antec 300, for both its looks and functionality. And I think you'll be very happy with that Asus mobo as well.

Any compatibility issues? Any more suggestions?

I'm really looking for a socket that will last. If I was going to buy Intel it would probably have to be 1366 and those bump above the 1090T. Any thoughts about sockets and the future would be great though.
