First Build - Help Appreciated!

Hey guys,

First post and first PC build! I know a little bit about how to put a system together - probably enough to get myself into trouble, so any help is welcomed!

My budget is around $2100Aud (pretty similar to the US dollar atm) and these are the components that I'm looking at using:

Coolermaster HAF 932 Case
Corsair HX-850 Modular PSU
Corsair H70 Liquid Cooling Unit
Corsair 12GB DDR3 Triple Channel 1600MHz RAM
Gigabyte X58 UD5 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz CPU
Hitachi 2TB Sata 7200rpm
Dual Nvidia GTS450 Leadteak Extreme GPU
Corsair Dominator Airflow Fan for RAM
Pioneer SATA DVD+CD/RW 24x Black
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe

Are these components compatible? Any improvements I could make within my budget? (Budget is for the box only, not including monitors, speakers etc etc)

I'm into performance, so anything that will speed the system up I'm interested in. I was thinking SSD for the OS but I don't know enough about them to make an informed decision. If I can get a substantial increase in performace for a slightly higher outlay, then I'm definitely open to it!

Looks good to me, intel works on some kinda 3 stick of ram operation thing i think so if your getting 12gigs of DDR3 it should be 3x4gig sticks, i think, Im an AMD guy so intel guys correct me if Im wrong. Also the sabretooth x58 board is a little better i think, and if you can spare the little extra cash go with the Corsair AX850 power supply over the HX, little better quality and fully modular instead of partial, and if you into performance change that hard drive to a Velociraptor, i still cant see paying what they want for solid state drives

Thanks for the reply! I didn't realise the intel board worked like that (3 sticks of RAM) - I thought it was just multiples of 3. I'll look into the sabretooth and AX850 too, didn't know the HX wasn't fully modular.

Do you know how to gauge how much power a given system needs based on components? I've seen charts that make recommendations based on GPU's, but surely there's more to it? I pretty much chose 850W at random, assuming it would be more than enough for what I'll be running.

Wait for Sandy Bridge and 25nm SSDs, coming very soon. Also, do not get dual 450s, get a single powerful card such as GTX570. The UD5 is a waste of money IMHO, the UD3R and P6X58D-E are much better value (and the sabertooth), but I wouldn't go X58, on January 5th new Intel CPUs, woo

EDIT: Definitely get an SSD, 60/120GB for OS and commonly used apps.

hmmm you might be right as well about the Ram, hopefully an intel guru will chime in on it, Im AMD and they dont do that kinda stuff... and yeah the main mobo connector and i think 2 or 3 other wires on the HX series are permanently attached
