First Build. Help

Hey..I built all the computer parts together. Everything comptatible with one another. Booted up and everything was fine..installed XP installed a lot of games then I started playing Doom 3. I played that for 15 min then my computer just shut off. I looked around the case to see the problem but I couldn't find anything wrong. I turned it back on and it started working again but the CPU fan wasn't on and my computer started smoking..i think from the motherboard. I turned it off and tried turning it on again...for a while I got flickers but now its completely dead. The standby light on the motherboard still comes on. What do you think the problem is? Here are my specs

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD 64 X2 4400+....I didn't use stock fan I bought another fan which is better
Nvidia 6800GT 256mb
1gb ram
300gb hard drive
 
you probably had a short somewhere, a wire not connected all the way, some metal object touching the mobo. you probably fried your MOBO, possibly your CPU. It could almost be anything. You'll need to try a different PSU first, then a different MOBO.
Are you overclocking?

Be sure that all the components are PROPERLY installed and not shorting out somewhere. Smoke usually indicates that kind of problem...
 
if the cpu fan isn't running, the cpu will overheat and shutoff to avoid damage. smoke indicates some sort of short, something may have got blown when it shutoff to begin with, then fried when you turned it back on. did you do any overclocking?

-to test the psu-
try disconnecting the 20/24 pin motherboard connections from the PSU. leave one or more harddrives/cdroms connected. now, short the green wire to any of the black wires on the PSU 20/24 pin connector (use a paper clip). This will make the PSU turn on. You can then check the voltages on each molex connector/rail.

The screws that lift the motherboard from touching the case. They screw into the case and then you screw the motherboard into them. Otherwise your motherboard will fry.
