Im building my first comp, and I don't know If there are good or bad brands out there for burners and rom drives. I am probably going to get 1 DVD burner, one cd rom drive, and a floppy. Hows that sound?

Thanks guys

First of all, welcome to the forum! :)

Well, lately theres no real need for a floppy but unless you really really want to, go ahead. And about the optical drives, prices are almost the same from CD-ROM's to DVD-ROM / RW so theres really no point in buying a CD-ROM.

What I'd do is save the $$$ from the floppy drive and get two DVD-Burners. One Lightscribe maybe?

And about the brands, I'd go for Lite-On and/or Samsung. I've had bad experiences with LG and Pioneer.

Two DVD-RW is the way to go. No floppy or CD-ROM.
Unlike ramodkk, I have had excellent experiences with Pioneer. My main rig has two Pioneer DVR-111D's in it with no problems from them.
I second his Lite-On recommendation and will add Plextor to the list.

Sorry for the noob question guys, but what are the benif. of having 2 dvd rw drives?

Sorry again :S

(PS: Not trying to thread jack)

Well, there's no real benefit. If you want you can get one of the to be just a DVD-ROM. Don't get just a CD-ROM/CD-RW because sometime you'll wanna make a copy of some DVD.

Oh ok, just wondering why people were saying to get 2 dvd/rw, but that answered it. Thank you

If you are still using windows-XP, and are going to use a SATA Hard Drive, then you are going to need a floppy drive for the SATA controller drivers that will be required to make the SATA Hard Drives work on Windows-XP. Although, there are programs that can rip a Windows-XP CD to include the drivers required to make it work for SATA controllers... but thats another topic to make if you get stuck!

You don't need a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM drives does a perfect job of reading CDs and DVDs as well.
