First build

Hello, I want to build my own pc. I will be starting from scratch with the exception of software. I will need monitor, keyboard, mouse etc... my budget is $750 USD. The minimum numbers i can have for school are:

2.53 ghz
can run windows 7 64 bit
160 gb 7200 rpm hdd (300+ preferred)
4 Gb RAM (ddr3 if possible)
at least 256 video dedicated memory
optical drive can burn dvds
need several usb ports
can run 802.11b wifi

If you can point me in the direction of good research articles/ places to buy parts that would be much appreciated.
 
That mobo is great, but there is 1 flaw about it.

that isn't a flaw at all. If anything, that is better, they have done it for a pretty obvious reason. Look at the video again, and look at it when he shows it from the side to show the height. Imagine negociating cable around the heatsink and ports. On my board I have the CPU socket the "usual" height and the CPU cable is pushing on the heatsink. It doesn't cause problems though in my system, and the same goes for if it were taller.

If anything, the layout of the Asus board is better because look at the SATA ports. All of the Gigabyte's SATA ports are hanging over. That is good in alot of cases, however the option for both top and side would be nice, one or the other is needed for different cable management layouts as well as different case layouts. I know in mine I have 1 HDD on the side SATA port, one on the top as it is easier. He does make a moot point about the SATA ports in the video about the top ports. He says a long video card could potentially block off the ports, however look at the placement, they are near enough in line with the last PCI port. You would have to have one hell of a hefty card to block them off
 
Oops, I've seen so many gaming Rig builds that I don't know what's what at the moment; sorry :P Does he really need a quad-core? He could save alot of money, although he did specifically say $750 :L

probably not, but will help if he wants to do alot of things at once. Also it fits well within the budget, so why not?

Suppose you are right that such a CPU isn't necessary, could go under budget and get

instead, which will perform as well in the situations it will be used in, but is $50 less, so can either be pocketed or get a better monitor:

I just thought it would be a problem for him because of the psu you linked him. If he dose cable management and takes the 4+4 atx/eps connector behind the mobo and finds out it's not long enough he will need to buy an extender to plug it in.
 
If he is just going to use onboard video and not crossfiring. Both boards are a waste of money. A 785 board would do him just fine.
 
Thanks for all the help. I am going to go with the build from the first post. I will probably get cheaper keyboard, mouse and monitor though.

What other supplies are needed in addition to those to complete an assembly? (cables, special tools etc...)

All cables and screws are included, you just need a philip's (cross-head) screwdriver
