First component to fail me with future games?

so you think my cpu should stay solid for a while (i'll be overclocking it to 3.2 or 3.4GHz when I get my new heasink/fan). I agree with the RAM. Dirt already has 2gb for the recommended requirements.

ram, not because you don't have enough just that it seems games and apps become more and more memory hungry every day

Yup ram...then the vid card.

things go outdated so fast:cool:,But i dont think youl have any problems just yet before needing an upgrade because thats a pretty decent rig.

I don't think the video card will be outdated fast. Up until a while ago the 6800 was still a decent card so the 8800 should last at least until the 9 series.

DiRT runs fine on my system, it runs @ 1280 x 1024, Everthing on High and Ultra (were possible) except for the crowd. Which I turn down because they aren't that important :P :D

Ya, i'm going to run games on a 19 inch CTR monitor at probably 1280 x 1024 so i think my video card should do well (i wanna try it on a 21 inch widescreen at 1600 x 1280 flat panal just to see how it hold up with only 320mb) At least RAM is easy to upgrade and it's also cheap! i think 4gb (3.75 with 32-bit OS) should be enough for a while.

Video card hands down. 2Gb of ram will get you through for some time to come. but the grafic's card surely wont handle newest games to come on maxed settings.

the vid card won't "fail", certainly within about 2 years it won't be playing the newest games on everything maxed, but even in about 5 years time you'll be playing the latest games on medium setting, i'm using a 7 year old all-in-wonder card which still handles everything fine on medium

that's ridiculous his graphics card will last last just fine the newest games out right now don't even use it all the way

Those are DX9 games using it though. DX10 is supposed to be a lot more demanding and he only has 320MB of ram on it so it wont last as long as the 640MB will cause DX10 will be demaniding and need a lot of Vram.

Absolutely agree with Archangel. That card Has two things against it; It's a first generation DX10 card, And while it may perform admirably with DX9, Dx10 is a totally new ballgame. It's second downfall is the memory size.. Dx10's larger textures will use more memory than previously, And as Dx10 evolves the increased texture size will undoubtedly climb.

By the end of the year the Much more powerful GF9 series will be out, giving the developer even more incentive to raise the graphical bar. The 2GB will keep him longer than the Video Card will.

its 'just' the GTS, and it 'just' has 320 Mb RAM tough :) My cards have about the same power as that one, and mine are a bit over 2 years old now iirc :) so yea, the grafic's card is imo the weakest link here for sure.

I agree that the video card will be the first thing to go, in about 1.5 to 2 years. Possibly the HDD, 160 GB is getting to be on the smallish end even now...

Just a question, how long do you think my rig will last?
I'm guessing the GPU will be the first to go, but it's the highest end DX9 card.

Well that's subjective. You'll never need anything better if you plan to play in DX9 forever, it's when you want to play DX10 that you'll need to upgrade.

Well, I don't plan on getting a DX10 card or Vista any time soon, so I guess I'm Ok there, I just hope they will release the newer games in DX9 aswell as DX 10, like Crysis.

im sure they will still release newer games in DX9 for some time because not everyones going DX10 just yet.

then if you need more power you could just overclock your e6300 and maybe get another gig at a later date if needed but you probably will be sorted for some time yet before needing any upgrade i think :)
