First computer build, need a little help...

I recently built a computer (my first) and I'm very disappointed with it's performance. I know there has to be something stupid I'm overlooking.

AMD Phenom II x4 940 3.0GHz
ASUS M4A79 Deluxe BIOS 0903 02/09/09
GeIL Evo One 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
ASUS EAH4870 DK/HTDI/1GD5 Radeon HD 4870 CCC version 9.4
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
Vista X64

Nothing is overclocked. It never crashes, but again I haven't had it for too long. Did all the Vista updates, graphics card has the latest drivers from AMD. I get no error messages whatsoever. I disabled the cool and quiet in the BIOS, and in the Vista Power Settings I've set it to Performance.

The problem is when I run MS FSX I get between 10 - 20 FPS. I tried messing around with the game and CCC settings (find a happy medium) but they don't seem to make more then a few FPS difference.

I did look at the bios and everything seems fine there. The temps/voltages are within the MB ranges for processor and memory. Checked the voltages in the hardware monitor menu in the BIOS and VCORE was between 1.387 -1.390 but the 12V was at 11.476V (no load). According the Corsair there is a +/- 5% tolerance (11.4V-12.6V) and this is within limits. All the drives and graphics card are recognized. I don't realy feel comfortable messing around with the voltages for the processor.

Im running the basic FSX, SP2 with the DX10 enabled. No other mods installed.

I'm just looking for some ideas on narrowing down the problem.

ive done a little bit research into your problem!

a few people have been reporting of 20fps with the 4870, the flight simulator seams to hog cpu and ram as well as gpu....

i think a little bit cpu overclock might help, your settup will be good on almost every game out there but with the ms fsx you have hit a wall

FSX can be extremely demanding of a system, particularly when set to high resolutions and ultra detail settings. Just read some of the reviews at Newegg – A lot of people that buy it are unable to run it at playable frame rates because it’s so demanding. I’m able to drag my system down to 10-15 FPS when flying over cities with settings on ultra, however, with settings set down to high and when over less detailed terrain I can get 40-50 FPS. What resolution and settings are you running at? And have you tried setting a target frame rate of around 25 fps and set detail settings down a little. That’s how I run it and only occasionally get a little stutter when the image has a lot of fast moving objects. You also might want to do a test run with 3DMark06 to benchmark your system – Could be your system’s fine, you’ve just chosen one of the most demanding applications available to base your judgment on.

everything that the above person said is right. Looks like your system is a good spec rig you just chose a demanding game

For better performance in Flight Sim X, what ive found is first start by turning off all vehicle traffic, and lowering all other traffic to around 20%, this helps performance quite a bit. Also, turn off ingame Anti Aliasing, that will also help performance. Mind you you wont get 60+fps running on full high settings, but you should get into the playable range for fsx(~30fps average is what i get on my sig rig). I honestly dont see why everyone bases performance off crysis lol, imo flight sim X with everything cranked is even more demanding.
