i just purchased the following setup:

ASUS M4A785-M Motherboard

and AMD HD9850WCGHBOX Phenom X4 9850 Quad Core Processor - 2.50GHz, 4MB Cache, 3600 MT/s FSB, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket AM2+, Processor with Fan

parts i have left over and am planning on using from my old build would be:
western digital 500 gig sata hd with 32 bit xp home installed
2 1 gigabyte sticks of pc53000 ram
450 watt power supply
nividia gt220 graphics card.

I know the 667mhz ram is going to be a fairly nasty bottleneck but, i plan to purchase 4 gigs of pc9600 overclocking ram in the future. I'm just currently horribly sick of lagging ass while waiting on my 3ghz hyper threading cpu.
This will be my first ever motherboard/cpu install from scratch any info or helpful hints is most definetly welcome.

Will i need to do anything special to configure the new board, other than load the supplied drivers cd's and do a repair install of xp (sorry nooby alert).

A Phenom I 9850 would not have been a processor I would have bought at this time.

But as far as your OS. A clean install would be the best. If not, uninstall all the old board drivers before you swap out. If it boots, install all your new drivers. If it doesnt boot a repair install will work. Either way you will probably have to revalidate/activate the OS
 
well i was working on a negative 100$ budget lol... that was the main reason for the processor choice. thank for the info though, i was just worried about the software side, i'm a mechanic so i don't normally have any real problems physically building things.

i paid 150$ for the board and processor so i didn't think i did to bad there, main attraction would be i can currently use my old memory for now and the processor i would think is still light years ahead of my old school 3.0 i would think, agreed?

i'm sure you will think this is a realy ignorant question too ,but how would i go about finding my old board drivers to uninstall them?
 
Add and Remove programs in control Panel. Anything listed for the board. Chipset Drivers/Sound Drivers/Lan Drivers/ I would even uninstall your video drivers and reinstall the newest ones after you swap out.
 
SO HOW bad of a choice did i make concerning processor choice?

i dont do anything major on the computer, play some first person shooters and rpgs, surf the web and watch dvds/ blurays on my big screen attached to the graphics card.

i can't even watch 1080p video (one of my main uses). I would think this processor should be able to handle everything i currently throw at my 3ghz processor with a little room to grow, worst come to worse i could replace it with a athlon 3 socket cpu a couple years down the line.
