hey all,
after growing disgusted with my family's dinosaur of a computer, I decided to make one of my own.
I'm snooping around on newegg for deals and general guidelines, but i'd love some backup on my purchase choices.
CPU -either intel 3 ghz duo core or amd 2.5 ghz quad core
mobo- has to have xfire or sti compatibility, and work with processor
graphics card- toughie. between nvidia 260, ati 4870, or a pair of lower-end cards running parallel.
4 gigs of ram to start out with
19" widescreen lcd monitor
idk how big my power supply needs to be... 550-700 watts i'm guessing
DVD read/writer (20x)
640 gb hard drive
sound good?

Sounds just dandy... what OS are you planning to use? Reason why I ask is the RAM, if you use XP32 it wont utilize all of the ram 64bit would and so would Vista. I would also lean more towards the 700w PS.

What is your budget?

What is your main applications for this PC?

CPU: Have you consider AMD Phenom II CPU?

Mobo: Why do you need crossfire/ SLi mobo?
You would not need to run dual video card if you only plan to hook it to 19" monitor.
MultiGPU Update: Two-GPU Options in Depth
It would be best to go for intel core i7 if you have the money ($1200-1300).

GPU: A high end single card would run better than dual of low end card

PSU: 500W ($60) for single video card, get 750W ($110) if you want to run dual video card

DVD burner: the fastest speed is 24 x, no reason of getting 20x.
