First ever Gaming Computer!! seeking the wise!

Hello! my name is Siu-lung, and i love games. I used to play starcraft and diablo ll when my computer was able to, through out time the games started to evolve, but my computer didnt. I eventually stopped playing computer games and just stayed with my consoles. I currently have a ps3 and an xbox360, but to tell you the truth every game that i play feels the same now.
Thats why i have decided to build my first gaming computer.
Doing research i came across these amazing forums, but to tell you the truth its pretty scary to start ordering stuff without really knowing if they are compatible.

I would really appreciate if you guys could help me choose the parts for my first build. THANKS A MILLION!

I currently have 1000.00 usd, and a monitor. I would like to go with AMD Phenom ll x4 or x2..........i still need to buy the OS.

FYI I've noticed with high performance Diablo II has problems :/ I cant keep it stable on my new machine. I was able to tone down my older machine a bit more and it still lags but it doesn't freeze anymore. If your still going to play DII and you have the same problem, let me know if you fix it, otherwise be warned!

You can't run SLI on an AMD chipset.

that motherboard only has 1 pci-e slot though. if i were you i would consider getting a phenom ii 955 with a better motherboard.

Not really a need for more than one pci-e x16 slot if you are running an nvidia card, as a dedicated physx card is pretty much a waste, and PCIE NICs or sound cards are generally pcie x1 or x4, which the board has you covered for both of those.

Its an AMD processor, ATI doesn't make chipsets(they fall under AMD branding), and intel only makes chipsets for intel processors. nForce chipsets are pretty terrible, especially with AMD platforms.

oops, i'm tired :P

i meant an nvidia chipset. although i didn't realize they were bad since i don't have much experience with them.

Generally speaking nvidia chipsets have always been a pain, back in the 775 days the only reason i even purchased nvidia boards(such as the 790i i run) was because ATI wasnt very close to nvidia for performance, and the only way to run SLI was on these boards. Anymore, there really isnt a reason to go with an nvidia chipset unless you are dead set on SLI, and even then they are a pain for overclocking and such, plus nvidias onboard NIC's are terrible.

People seem to really like that card and Bomberboy definitely knows what he's talking about. I think you still need to add a case to Bomberboy's build list, but otherwise I'm sure it's the best stuff you can get for the money. Yeah, I'd expect it'll play your games Really well.

Generally speaking, for SLI you would either need an nForce chipset based AMD motherboard, or an X58 or P55 based intel motherboard. There are a few X58 and P55 boards that do not support SLI however.

So the option to SLI is pretty new, I guess. Also, are there similar restrictions to being able to Crossfire? Do you need an nForce chipset for multiple Radeon cards with an AMD board?

no crossfire uses a different set of chipsets (amd chipsets). those would include ones like 780, 790, and the new 8xx series chipsets. crossfire is also supported by a lot of intel chipsets as well. nforce chipsets do not support crossfire.
