Hello All,
Looking to put together my firs PC instead of going the Dell cookie cutter route. This PC will be used for office applications, photo/video editing, music, and maybe some light gaming. I would love to keep this under $400 and $500 is a firm limit. I took these from the "work pc" computer specs 101 section:

MOBO: FoxConn 945GZ7MC-RS2H [i945GZ, ICH7R] ($49.99)

RAM: Super Talent 2GB PC2-5400 [2x1GB, [email protected]] ($79.99)

CASE+PSU: Linkworld 431-10 C2228 + 430W PSU [12V@18A] ($24.99)

PROCESSOR: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor ($188.00)

VIDEO CARD: MSI NX6200LE-TD128EH GeForce 6200LE 128MB ($33.99)

Total Price: $376.96 + shipping

I am planning on pulling an old 30 gig Seagate drive and an old 250 gig maxtor drive from my current computer (dell dimension L1100R, 1.1 ghz, 256MB), and a plextor CDR as well as all mouse, keyboard etc. Any opinions on this build? The case doens't get great reviews, and should i upgrade to a 256MB Video card? I plan on running XP Pro for a while but may upgrade later to Vista. Other concerns? Thanks alot...i am looking forward to this project! :)

I wouldn't waste the money on the 6200LE. The onboard is probably just as good. Save up and get at least a 7600...

That PSU is pretty sorry, but it should get you by...

What about this build?

you reccomend a higher priced mobo, but a cheaper processor. can you explain your reasoning to a newbie. :o thanks.

Quality mostly, the C2D you posted is good but meh, you're better off buying the e4300 and OC'ing it to the same or higher speed than buying a e6400/e6420 and a cheap ass mobo

Dont waste money on the 6200LE, because for only $75 or so you could buy the 7600GS, but if your not into gaming at all, then just stick to onboard video.

thanks i am thinking this is a good idea..some gaming could be fun plus don't i need the better video card to run Vista stuff eventually?

Thanks also chupacabra - although i am clueless as how to go about "overclocking".

And I think you can only use one of your old HDD nly. Because the lastest MB only allow you to link upto 2 IDE device

You *could* get a S-ATA optical drive because they're not a lot but you can then use both your HDD's and have better transfer rates on CD's or DVD's.

daisy's suggestion is an excellent choice...see my sig almost the same ...read OCing 101 one of Preator's sticky's stay with us we'll have you OCing in no time :D ;)
