IDE Answer: If you are going to have multiple drives on one IDE cable, the drives themselves will have the jumpers. There will be a little graphic right by the jumper to show you how to set it to do what. If you have 2 drives on one cable, you set one drives jumper to Master and the other one to Slave.

The first CD you will put in will be the Operation System disc. Boot from it to install the OS. Once the OS is installed you insert your MOBO's driver disc to install any drivers for your MOBO. After that you will use any other add-on cards CDs that they came with. Then, just to make sure you have the most up to date drivers, visit your MOBO manufacture's website and download your MOBO's latest drivers, and the same with any add-on cards you may install. After that, run Window's Update to make sure you have the most up to date security patches and what-not for your OS.

When I ran a HDD and a CD-ROM off one IDE I set the HDD to master and CD-ROM to slave. It doesn't really matter which way you do it, as long as one is Master and one is Slave. You'll have problems are both Slave or both Master.

I found an article at DELL on installing from scratch. This is the order they recommend for installing drivers.

O/S first is a given

Drivers

1) DDS ( Desktop System Software )
2) Chipset
3) Video Adapter
4) Network Interface Card
5) Audio Adapter
6) Modem
7) Wireless Network Card
8) Touchpad, Pionter, Trackstick, Mouse, Keyboard
9) Other devices.

Most of that is either taken care of with the driver disc, or when Windows automatically finds it and installs it.
