First time builder.. Advice?

It's not brilliant I'm afraid. The case and power supply are kind of junky, and the FX-8120 isn't actually an octa-core (it's a quad-core with 4 additional virtual cores from what I've read), it's also overkill for gaming.

The graphics card is good though, there's nothing wrong with that.

You'd be better off buying each part individually, then you can choose what you want. Spend less on the CPU and get a better case and power supply. The Corsair Carbide 300R is a great case and a Corsair CX 600 power supply would be more than enough power.

I would honestly go with an intel build. This is extremely controversial, but every AMD build I've made ended really badly. Just my opinion.

4100 is a great bang for the buck chip. You'll need an amd 990fx chipset motherboard to run it though, and that's a Z68 intel board.

That will be my next test. :) FX chips have a good 1866 controller, so I'm gonna overclock my RAM and see what happens.

Yeah I was gonna mention you could possibly overclock the 1600MHz RAM to 1866 if you really wanted the extra speed - would that be a good idea? Anyway, let us know what you find when you do the tests. :)

Depends on what RAM. I have 1.5v and low timings, so I should have plenty of play room.

What does that mean? The only company that uses virtual cores is Intel. A 8120/8150 has 8 sets of pipelines, they share some upperend and L2 cache. Nothing virtual about it.

At the same ghz.
The 4000 has to share if its running more then 2 threads.
If the 4000 is running more the 2 threads the 8120/8150 is faster.

The 6000 has to share if its running more then 3 threads.
If the 6000 is running more then 3 threads the 8120/8150 is faster.

I personally just buy the cheapest SATA DVD-RW out there. LG, Lite-On, Samsung and Sony are all good brands to go for, just get whichever is cheapest. Some of the drives come bundled with software such as Nero as well which can be nice sometimes. :)

Strangehold, always defending bulldozer.A 8120 is not a true 8 core.A 6100 is true 6 core and a 4100 is a true quad core, but the arcitecure isnt very good on any of them.I am by no means a intel fanboy, nor a amd fanboy.I would be fine with a BD, but a i5 would beat a 8120, for the same price.A i3 is probobly not good enough to beat a 6100 or 4100, but in single threaded, a i3 would win.
