First Time Building - Tight Budget

Well made dad hs given me a budget of just $600. I want to know if it's possible to build a computer from that. I'm looking for one that will run all the latest games like GTA IV and stuff. Basically a high end gaming computer but to fit into that budget.

I already have a monitor and will be using the Harddrive from this computer.

So, is it possible? And what parts do you recommend?

Main things that I know I'm look for is a strong processor (I've hear something about i7 or a quad core), good/great graphics card and about 4gb of ram.. Thats just a guideline, Thanks so much for the help :)

$600 wont be able to buy you an i7 system. I'm on about the same budget and faced the same disappointment a few weeks ago xD

Haha well to be honest I dont even know what i7 is. What I'm really trying to get though is a good gaming computer, my current one has become out-dated with all the advancements in technology. How big of a budget do you need to get an i7 system? (If it's worth it)

Yes i'll need an optical drive. Just a basic one though, so no Lightscribe and that stuff. But it must run high-end games. Operating system I'll need too. I have a keyboard and mouse and speakers. Oh yes, i'll also be needing a new case..

Got this from another thread, think it's a good processor to use? Its quad-core and might make everything a little more expensive

Where will you be buying from?

Converted into Rands it will be around R4900. It's a tight budget but if you can build something around please list some parts. Thanks in advance :)

US$600, you could probably get these
Vista Premium 64bit OEM $100
Case $35
500W PSU $50
DVD burner $25
2 x 2GB RAM DDR2 800 $50
250 GB HDD $50
Video card: ATI 4830/ ATI 4770/ 9800GT $100

AMD set up:
Mobo with 760G with SB710 chipset $60
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz $90

Intel:
Mobo with G43 chipset $70
Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz $90

The total is around $570 as I expect south africa hardware price could be higher or not all hardware is availiable...
For AMD set-up, I suggest you choose from the following CPU, just find one suit your budget and availible
AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma
AMD Athlon 64 X2 7850 Kuma
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition
AMD Phenom II X3 710

For intel set up: pentium dual-core E5200/E5300/ E6300

And for video card, again just pick one which suit your budget
4670 < 9600GT < 4830 ~ 9800GT < 4770 < 4850 ~ GTS 250

Wow thanks. Thats exactly what I need, thank you!

I'll go with the intel rather than AMD. I've always used intel so I'll just stick with it.

What box do you recommend I get? One that'll fit all of that.

And for the graphics card I really have no clue as to which ones better? Which one will give me the best performance/quality for gaming?

And, just out of interest, is that the strongest processor that I could get to fit my budget? I will pay like $50 more if its really worth it. And what is the difference between Vista-16bit and 64bit?

Vista 32bit sees max of 4gb memory(less than that because of addressing space though...)
Vista 64bit can see alot more memory.

Basically, the cards were listed best to worst by daisymtc, so go for the best you can of budget.

For CPU, If you were to spend a little more the Phenom II X3 710 would be the best cpu for that kinda budget.

For case, the Coolermaster Elite series are good cases, The Xclio Godspeed One/Two, The Antec Three Hundred, and Coolermaster Centurion 5 cases are all good budget cases.
