First time computer build

Hey i need help choosing parts for a build. i havent followed computers for quite some time now and alot has changed so im not sure what to be looking for or whats best and so on.

What i will be using it for:
- i will be using the computer for school and gaming.
- i play counterstrike source though and it doesnt take that much to run the game.
- i will be using all kinds of software such as 3D modeling, and video editing.
- i want something that will last several years and will be able to upgrade at least a little bit.

I was looking at a Core 2 Quad Q9550, not sure if this is a good choice but it seemed pretty good, but im looking for suggestions so choose anything you think is best.

for the motherboard you've pretty much lost me. i have no idea.

i want 4Gb (2 x 2Gb of ram)

and harddrive space isnt that important for me. less than 200 is fine. 7200rpm at least.

trying to keep it as cheap as possible but still a very niec computer. like under 800? i think thats a reasonable amount for a good computer but tell me what you think, and i gotta go! any questions you have i can answer when im back.... THANKS!!!

-Matt

Core 2 Quad Q9550 use socket LGA 775 which is no longer being made so if you won't an upgradable system then you going to have to use AMD or get an i7 which are way to expensive.

This is just to give you an Idea of what to look for.

heh, i pciked out alot of those exact or similar parts already ^_^. as for the socket 775 thing that kinda sucks. im more of an intel fan, mainly because ive enver owned an amd lol but still. maybe i should put off a new computer until i7's drop in price =/ unless you think i'll be set with that quad core for several years to come and i can make it live off other updrageds like sli/crossfire, more ram etc.

Well I was once an Intel fan boy to that was until I got tired of Intel over charging on there CPU's and they come out with a new socket like every 1 or 2 years. So I switched to AMD and don't regret it at all and I don't ever plan on going back to Intel. I don't think the i7 prices are going to drop seeing how it's about to be joined by the i3,i5,and i9. You could wait to get an i3, or i5 but my guess is the i7 will remain the same and the i9 will probably cost like $2k. All of the new CPU's Intel is releasing each has a different socket so each one is only upgradeable by so much. The only CPU that will work with the i7 is the i9 and I believe there is only one i9 that will have the same socket of the i7.

The Phenom 710 Tri-Core processor is probably the best quality buy for your dollar out there right now. It beats all the Core 2 Duo processors and Athlon Dual-Core processors.

Front Side Bus (or external data bus) connects the processor to the motherboard. All data entering or leaving the processor comes through the front side bus.

AMD processors use HyperTransport Technology. HyperTransport Technology is a faster speed point-to-point link designed to increase the communication speed between integrated circuits in computers. HyperTransport technology helps reduce the number of buses in a system, which can reduce system bottlenecks and enable today's processors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.

I wouldn't worry so much about the Front Side Bus and mega transfers per second. The biggest bottlenecks in a system usually are the processor, RAM and the video card.

The components that Fatback suggested to you will give you decent processing power.
