First time installing memory card

Okay, I'll admit, I have no idea what I'm doing. Now, don't get me wrong, I take SCSI cards and video cards in and out of boxes at work. Playing with hardware doesn't scare me at all. I've just never actually put a memory card in my own machine at home. What are the basic steps?

I'm assuming kill the machine (obvious), open the side, find a slot, install, reboot. Beyond that, is it plug and play or do I need to download drivers from within the OS?

I take it you are installing RAM, really easy just make sure you have compatable products first. Turn off the PC, put the system on its side.
Take the side pannel off then hold on to the chassis for a few sec`s (to earth/ground your self). then find out what slot you want to install the memory in and pull the tags outwards. Then just push in the stick so the tags click into place. Bingo RAM installed, put everything back together and turn on the pc. No drivers or software will be required.

I'm throwing in a little 256M stick to try and revamp my old HP XP setup. The comp works fine, but hangs and drags on needless applications. I can understand when it gets caught up on a 10,000 Dreamweaver file. But, booting and regular startup can be a killer.

I'm assuming slot position doesn't matter so long as the stick doesn't physically touch anything...like a heat sink or a major cable??? We use some long SCSI cards at work that require specific slots because they extend past the end of the slot a few inches and occassionally run into other internal devices.

Are you adding that to the existing RAM in it, or replacing?

I ask, becuase of compatability issues when people mix and match different types of RAM together.

Adding to...but, I'm not sure. At present, I believe the only memory in the machine was from the motherboard and the original factory install. I tried pretty hard to find a compatible unit. Here's the site I used to find a compatible unit. Seemed pretty solid to me.

This is not the actual unit I ordered...I don't have my specs now, but everything I input seemed correct.

So the RAM you bought is the same speed as the one in your mobo? If it was higher, then it would've been a waste of money becuase it would get downgraded to the speed of your current RAM.
