First Time Power Up --- Something's Wrong --- I'm scared....

I "finished" building my PC I guess, I had the HD connected via SATA power and SATA data, my DVD/RW drive connected up via old school, and everything should have been in place...

I turned the power on, the LED on the front of the case turned on, but I immediatly heard a loud GRINDING NOISE, and the monitor never recieved a signal... i turned it off after about 10 sec.

wtf is going on ? :(

ok the second power up attempt I heard NO grinding noise which is good I guess...

I should add a few things, I dont know if this is messed up or not:

- My MB (Asus p5B) does not have Crucial RAM on it's list of "Qualified Vendors" in the Manual. I am using Crucial DDr2 667 1GB RAM... I thought it should work anyway...

-In the MB, there is 4 slots for RAM, One white and one black together, and then another set of the same, slightly apart. like 2 different sets of white and black. They are called DIMM_A1 - DIMM_A2, and DIMM_b1 - Dimm_b2

I inserted the ram into one set, as in one stick in Dimm A1 and one stick in DIMM_A2 ... I assumed this is what i was supposed to do.

-I left the jumpers on my DVD/RW cd DRive to "slave", seeing as I figured that was a slave drive...

-My HD, (Western Digital Raptor), had no case for the jumpers... like no little jumper selecter case thingy, but it also had no instructions on the HD for how to set it to slave or master, etc, so I just left it as is, figuring it would automatically be selected as the "master". I connected it to the SATA_1 input on the MB.

Anything fuxed up???

you dont need jumpers for SATA harddrives... also it doesnt reammy matter what the DVD is on... but put it on Master... or CS (Cable Select)

My first response would be to make sure evrything is connected correctly.

Go through the MOBO manual slowly and carefully and make sure you have every power cable connected. When I put my rig together I forgot a little square 4-pin connector (at the top of my MOBO, might be a different place on your's) and I got similar symptoms. Although, it did turn off and on OK I think.

Once youhave elimited that possibility, it might be possible to narrow it further.

I had the same problem. Took it to Circuit city and it didn't post is what they said. The MOBO was shot. x_x dead, gone, *pituwy*. you using a GPU? Even with a GPU on mine it didn't works. And the thing is, I didn't do a gosh darn to pickin conflabin darn too-tin thing to it. I was like "what the hay ho didaly o yo?" Then I got a new MOBO. Things were better from then on.

BTW... when i tried to turn it off, it wouldnt turn off... I had to flip the switch in the back.
Did you hold it for 4seconds or so? Current generation power supplies require you to hold them to actually turn them off (which isnt very intuitive really)

Prolly just a fan chewing the cable up. Make sure all your cables are clear of fans.

Oh god hehe the joy of that mobo. If you're not getting a beep when you're booting up... that's because the ram really isnt supported. You can try flashing to the latest BIOS but no gurantee it will work (i.e., my OCz EL Gold XTC wont post at all)

To rule out the very likely scenario of completely incompatible memory, are you getting a POST beep?

i'm gettin no beep :(

how do i flash it if the monitor isnt even connecting?

do u think it might be a problem w/ vid card? All i need to do is plug the vidcard into the pci slot right? I dont need to power it or anything...

Yeah, short of some really wierd crap happening, that's ram not playing nice with the machine

Get some ram (either buy some cheap stuff, borrow from friend, or bring into a small computer store and often if you play nice they'll let you borrow a stick for a few min)

do you have an onboard option? If you do try that. Some video card require that you install drivers BEFORE you install them. That sux though for a MOBO with no onboard...... and did you say PCI?????? Not PCI-E? if so your going to need A LOT of RAM....

hey, sorry for not checking the questions earlier.

Anyway good call on checking the fan of the Gfx card... It IS spinning so i guess thats not the problem...

I cant believe these guys dont build there shit to take corsair

Such as? All videocards are required to support basic VGA mode -- as is the operating system so what you've suggested should never be an issue

and did you say PCI?????? Not PCI-E? if so your going to need A LOT of RAM....
? Having more RAM isnt going to make a difference unless its an onboard VC

Hehe Corsair aint the only "victim" so to speak... but its really dependent on the mobo

no no, I didnt mean PCI plain, it's actually PCI-Ex16 or whatever...

I have no onboard unfortunatly
In that case, what videocard do you have? (and not having onboard is generally a good thing)
