I am trying to work on a friend's computer. Everytime he turns it on a 32hal.dll error shows. The desktop will not load. He is running Windows XP. He did not have his startup disk, however he did have the product key. We got an upgrade version of a Windows XP cd and tried to reinstall, and the error now says that it needs the whole OS installed.
Is there anyway to troubleshoot this through BIOS etc. without repartitioning or replacing the hard drive, or doing a total reinstall of XP?
Keep in mind that the desktop will not load. Thank you for any help you can offer!
